Ah, gotcha, I'd imagine they'd lose their minds if the Texans passed on Teddy twice.

    McNair Speaks

    Here is Bob McNair:

“Really at this point we don’t know and we really won’t know until right up at the time we have to make a decision because people are talking to us about the possibility of trading down and it’s a question of what people offer, whether their offer is such that it’s worthwhile to trade down,” McNair told FOX 26 in Houston regarding the team’s plans for the pick."

“You take a guy like Clowney,” McNair said. “He’s obviously the best player in the draft, but he’s a defensive end. He’s not a quarterback. If he’s a quarterback and the best player it’s easy, but that’s not the case. So can that defensive player have a greater impact on the success of your team than one of these quarterbacks? It’s not a sure thing that he is. . . . If somebody wants you to drop down and they give you two or three more picks that would let you get two or three more quality players, are you a stronger team dropping down a little bit, getting these additional picks and getting more depth?”

“You got three quarterbacks and all of them have some holes in their resume,” McNair said. “A quarterback that goes out and performs for you and is a franchise quarterback is more valuable than a player playing another position, but there’s a lot more risk there. It’s a more difficult position to play and there are lot more failures.

“You drop down and there’s another group close behind, not exactly where they are, and maybe one of those quarterbacks will become better than one of these other three,” McNair said. “There are no slam dunks. There are no Andrew Lucks out there, no Peyton Mannings. If there were it would be an easy decision, but that’s not the case.”

“I think that we’re going to greatly strengthen our team as a result of the draft,” McNair said. “We’ve got 11 picks now in the draft and it’s a deep draft. So we’re going to get some good players regardless as to what we do. If we trade down and pick up two or three more players, we’d have 13 or 14 [draft picks]. So you’re going to see some significant strengthening of our team as a result of this draft.”

The OP just may be right about trading down.

I feel as if McNair wants Manziel.

The rest of the Texans brass want Clowney/Mack

1a-Trade back to either 5/6 and draft Manziel

    2a-Clowney

    3a-Mack

Either of those three would do just fine for me.

To me, the Texans just tipped their hand completely. It's obvious they want to trade the first pick and move down, but if they don't do that they're going with Clowney. The only way Houston takes Manziel is if they trade back, but that's only going to happen if he is the best player available at wherever they end up picking. My guess? Pick gets traded to Atlanta, Manziel is already gone, and the Texans end up taking Matthews from A&M. That both satisfies a need and helps to pacify the super pissed off Aggies at the same time.

I don't see them taking Mathews at 6. They have that kid from NC that they got in the third round last year.

We shall see though, as we have no idea what BOB wants.

Clowney and Watt would be dominant for a long time.

I think as a Texan fan though, I can't endure another year of bad QB play. And if I have too, I hope it involves a rookie with promise.

I agree that those statements seem to indicate that they'll either trade back or just take BPA which is Clowney. However, I think trade back is fairly unlikely because I wouldn't imagine they want to trade too far down and I'd think they'd want quite a haul for the pick. I think the trade never materializes and they just stick with Clowney and call it a day.

I think you are setting yourself up for failure. The QB next year will almost certainly be either Fitz or Keenum (by some miracle) no matter who they draft this year. McNair and been very clear about not making the same mistake he made with David Carr, they are going with a vet at QB rather than throwing a rookie to the wolves.

I have no faith in any Houston team. Either this team sucks or barely makes the playoffs and loses the first game. So who we draft I'll be surprised if it's actually the best player overall.

And everything he said just confirms my worst fear, no balls and indecisive. Man up and either draft Clowney or Manziel. If you select Clowney, either trade back into the first for a QB or take the best one left at 2.1. If you select Manziel (cheers) then try to trade back into the first for a stud pass rusher.

Can we just draft Clowney or Mack and trade back in the first to grab Aaron Donald.

All while taking a third rounder on Carr, Gorappolo, Savage?

Aaron Donald would do us no good unless we switch to a one gap 4-3.

I was over the game last night in like 10 minutes. I guess i am just numb to it after all these years of being dissapointed. I sat there almost expecting that to happen and it did absolutely that.

Unless McNair has the greatest poker face ever to me he doesn't sound like he's sold on Clowney so they should trade back. Even if it's something stupid like to the rams at 2 and let them take the decision out of his hands.

Personally I'm not 100% in love with Clowneys hustle and heart but I like it enough that this would be a no brainer in my eyes, and I really love Manziel and think he's going to be a star.

He sounds to me like they feel they have no choice but to take Clowney, if they don't trade down. He seems to know that Clowney is the best player. But I think we're also giving JF too much credit; if anyone decides to trade up for our pick it's 100% for Jadeveon. So he knows, by saying that if they can't get a partner, it's obvious to take Clowney, it may make a team think a little harder when giving their "final offer"

Ok I missed when he said he thinks Clowney is the best player in the draft. But confuses me more. My draft strategy is alway select the best available player regardless of position or you trade down. I know the Texans need a QB. But here unless someone tops what Washington have up for RG3 I don't move and take Clowney. Even then I have to think very hard about it. I would rather be the team that drafted Clowney and he is a bust then the team that passed on him and he's a stud.
