Clutch left one possibility off of his list so I'll help him.... Biggest letdown... - Trading the pick for the likes of Brian Sknner or Brendan Haywood for "Win Now II" because #26 isn't expected to contribute this season.
At 26 you simply don't have many options, as fans we want the best, but you have to be realistic. I'm not going to judge Morey's GM value or ability based on the 26th selection in the 1st round. That means 25 other GM's were able to pick before him. He will simply be picking from what is left of the talent pool. If we stand pat at 26, you can only hope someone of value is left, but again most of the drama is out of Morey's hands. Most GM's I've heard say the hard picks come in the middle of the 1st round and early in the 2nd round. Those are the selections where you can make or break yourself as a GM. As for the draft, I have not seen a single Mock or read anything that would make me believe Josh McRoberts will still be around at 26, in fact I've read and heard the opposite that there was a team trying to trade up for him. Glen Davis has too many weight issues for me, and too many question marks about his overall game. They list him at 6-9, but he's alot closer to 6-7 then 6-9. His weight will always be an issue, just like Stanley Roberts had talent and his weight was always an issue. I can pass and be happy. Fazekas is a steady all-around player, but his upside his limited and so is his athletic ability, which in the west at PF could be trouble. Dudley is the most intriguing for me personally because I had the opportunity to see hm play alot and I was impressed. Most teams that played BC would key their defense to stop Dudley to he drew alot of double teams. He's a hustler, plays with heart, and has a nice mid rage game. The downside is his height, and he's not a big body. He'd possibly be a good 6th man at some point, but I don't see him as the answer to the PF question. Frankly at 26 you are not going to get your answer. If they trade up they might find themselves their answer, but what are you willing to give up, and who is that player to trade up for?
I'm keeping my expectations for this draft very low. The above scenario wouldn't surprise me. You have to question Morey's horse trading skills after the raping the rockets took from the Logo in last years draft.
The 26th pick is not my worry right now but all these trades especially the one with Garnett going to Phoenix for Marion. Oh my god I get goose bumps thinking about that, I mean we already have a hard time matching up with the Suns and now Garnett in that lineup. That would put them over the hump and basically create 3 powerhouse teams in the West Spurs, Mavs and now Suns. This really hurts Rockets chance in the playoff knowing you would have to play 2 of those 3 in order to win the West. It also makes my jealous that the rich are getting richer and we are stuck trying to find a quality PF at the bottom of the draft. Anyways I hope Rockets pull some trade tomorrow and we get us some good players for once. Sean Williams is my pick followed by Marco Belinelli.
I agree mostly with your post Stevie ... and though most mocks do have McRoberts before #26, I believe ESPN has him at #21, CNNSI has him at #25 and DraftExpress has him at 30. He could slide ... we'll see. I wouldn't mind him ... he's just not my beaming smile pick.
I didn't even prepare myself for such a scenario ... that would be bad, needless to say. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
man i cant wait anymore...the anticipation is killing me NBA draft is my fav time of year besides playoffs of course...but anyways i would be extremly happy if we got belinelli or almond...sean williams eh maybe... my draft night dream...getting ARTEST!!
Another possibility is trading out of the draft altogether for a future draft pick. Morey: We didn't think there was a player who could help out this year because it would mean taking up roster space for 3 years. We will get a better player next year which will help us in the future.
i really don't know these players and unlike last season, when our pick was real high, i'm not bothering to really research them. i'll feel the same about all of those guys if we stay at 26. however, i'll be real excited if we package 26 and a guy like luther/rafer/spanoulis, for something better. i'm not anticipating that though.
lets take sheldon williams off the hawks hands. hey, if the garnett trade goes down, it could happenl
I think drafting Jared Dudley would be smart, especially since it would free you to trade Battier since they are similar players.
I really only have two hopes for the draft. Either move up and get one of the PGs in the 12 - 18 range, or move out of the first and stock Euros and DL projects. I don't think theres much value where we're at for a team looking for rotation guys who can play inside of two yrs. I also won't be too dissappointed if the pick went with another play (Battier) for a PF as long as its not something stupid like getting Chris Wilcox. I'm actually pretty optimistic about a trade, how many deals get done that the Chris Fords get wind of before they go down, not many. So no news in good news in that case.
I don't know if that would be as bad a trade as I considered the Glen Rice trade a few years ago but it would have the same anti climatic let down.
I just want to point out that what often seems like a letdown on draft night becomes not such a letdown later on. When the trade was announced the consensus was about ‘99% letdown’ at the Battier/Gay trade last year. I know there are some people who still describe it as a letdown, but the vast majority who hated that trade felt differently once the season started. My point is that if you are letdown on draft night, it may not be as bad as it seems right then. And even if they get it wrong, no team has ever drafted perfectly and it is an impossible standard to hold them to.
do we really need to draft a pg? i mean we have 4 on our roster already...i just think any other position but pg and the Rockets are doing ok..
