A year and a half ago, I was the only person on the subway with an iPod. Nowadays, even the bum sleeping in the corner of the subway is listening to one. It's amazing. I mean, come on, even my parents want one. So, the RIAA better embrace this technology, because if my parents are getting in on the phenomenon, you know it's here to stay...
I will stop downloading music when libraries are banned. How is it legal that I can go and read copyrighted material from the library, but I can’t download and listen to copyrighted material? If I go to the library and check out a book I am absorbing all the information out of that book without purchasing the book. When I check out a book the publisher and writer are not getting paid. In fact, if I am late returning the book the library fines me. Looks to me like they are making money on copyrighted material. All joking aside (not really), libraries have not hurt the publishing industry that much. Unlike the publishing industry, who does not make any money off of the libraries, the music industry has a chance to make money with MP3 sites. Instead of the music industry being filthy rich now they are just very rich.
The simple answer is limited copy availability. There are usually only a few copies of each book made available to the entire library system. They are the property of the library. With downloading, unlimited copies can be made and the eventual copy becomes the property of the downloader. A better analogy would be photocopying every page of a book you checked out from the library which, of course, is illegal.
Until I see different, I'm keeping that horrific and cynical point of view. I'm talking about musicians and professionals, soundmen and studio workers and the whole lot: "why should I buy it when I have the burned CD off the internet?" These are the only people I deal with, in several towns, including all the acts that come through town ... the same routine, the same selfish ideals. Why buy it when I have the mp3s already burned.
Umm, because you are costing the guy next to you money ... and, better yet, the burned copy you have sounds like shyte.
Messed up my first post, because I'm a moron. Decided to add to it. Can't edit because I haven't contributed. Don't contribute because PayPal screwed myself and someone else I know out of a significant chunk of cash. Also think others should take a step back and slow down with the cross words.
