If someone's grandmother died, and they threw her body in the dumpster behind their apartment, would that be OK? There are certain conventions for handling human remains, and tossing them in the lavatory bin is generally not the preferred procedure.

If a 14 year-old had her dead grandmother come out of her vagina when shd didn't even know she was there, the comparison would be apt. This girl didn't know she was pregnant and freaked out. I'm just happy the authorities don't agree with no_answer.

I love to argue about stillborn baby remains. I wish I could have gotten into this thread earlier. :(

They still haven't said how far the fetus was.

Yeah, you would think they would mention that somewhere in the story.

Typical media -- leaving out the most important part of the story so it will retain it's shock value...

Considering the media nowadays, I'm surprised they didn't mention that. I'm willing to bet that this story will end up on Nancy Grace sooner or later.

In her loud voice, "A fetus left in trash on the airplane, should the mother be charged?"

So let me get this straight. A 14-year-old girl is irresponsible enough to have sex at such a young age. She is then irresponsible enough not to use protection. Then she is irresponsible enough to not realize she's pregnant. Then after realizing she's pregnant, she's irresponsible enough to simply throw the stillborn fetus away in a trash can. Yet, somehow, I'm supposed to feel as though none of this is her fault?

I agree there could be some mitigating circumstances such as if she was sexually assaulted and/or still was having her cycle. However, if not, the girl made the decisions to put herself in that position.

My girlfriend works for the Chronicle and can't believe that's not in the story.

Who knows. Maybe there will be TWO exclamation marks after the headline...you know, instead of just the normal one.

Point me to the poster who said that none of this is her fault. Of course she shares some of the blame, but the question is whether or not this is a criminal matter or if it was a scared girl who didn't know what she was doing.

Sometimes I think some of you forget what it's like to be 14. Kids make mistakes, sometimes huge ones. Should this girl's life be ruined if the story she telling is true? Obviously, the authorities don't believe so.

As far as whether it's a criminal matter or not, I will have to say I'm not an expert in the law regarding disposal of a fetus. I don't think it's treated the same as disposal of a dead body (which is considered "Tampering with Evidence"). So on that issue I will agree that I don't know whether or not this is a criminal offense.

And no, I don't forget what it's like to be 14. I think a lot of people underestimate their knowledge at that time in their lives because in a lot of people's minds it was so long ago. I have cousins who are that age and they know more than you think. Especially in this day and age where we make children grow up so fast.

I'm not saying her life should be ruined. However, some of you seem to be implying that because of the situation the girl isn't really to blame. I can't agree with that. There is a difference between right and wrong and no matter what, in my opinion, throwing away a stillborn fetus is wrong. Should she be sent to jail forever because of it? No, of course not. That doesn't excuse what she did, though, and that's all I'm saying.

Also, the society is becoming desensitized to things like this.

I didn't really flinch when the report said it was a 14 yr old girl. :(

Do you think it could have made it through luggage screening?
