I am worried about this game, it seems they have always done some really cool technology in their games but their story telling skills were not so good. Now, everyone has great technology, and it is more and more about the story...ala Half Life. Still a first day buy for me, but I am leary. DD
Damn...considering the XBox version won't be out until maybe X-mas or next year...I may have to buy a new PC that can handle playing this game. I'm not sure I can wait on the XBox version while all you PC gamers have your way with this game until then. My understanding is the XBox version will have some features the PC version won't but I understand the PC version will be the best looking version given you have the appropriate graphics card. I currently have a Pentium 4 1.4 and GeForce 2 Ultra which is not going to cut it I imagine without disabling all the graphic features that make this game what it is. Maybe I will just buy a Dell mid-line with the latest graphics card and go from there. I'm sure a lot of people will be buying a new PC just to play this game. It will also allow me to play some other games I imagine I would have trouble running now...like BF: Vietnam. Comments? Are you in a similar boat? Hay Caramba! Dios Mio! Edit: Oh hell...I may just have to build another PC myself. I don't think the Dell mid-range systems will please me...AT ALL. LOL. I think I could get more bang for the buck by buying the individual components and putting them together myself...obviously. A trip to Frye's Electronics is in order I guess. Surf
How much money you willing to spend? I see an AMD FX-53 (939 pin), nVIDIA nForce3 Ultra chipset based motherboard (socket 939), a gig of Corsair XMS memory, and a GeForce 6800 Ultra in your future. Then we need to talk about getting two 74 gig 10,000rpm Raptor hard drives in Raid 0 and some really nice air cooling. Then you need a CRT that can go up to 2048x1536 and you will have the best Doom 3 and Farcry box you can get! The only problem is I will probably try to steal it from you...... or atleast come over and play too?
$2,000 ... lose the new monitor and one of the hard drives. I think I could come in close to that with new AMD FX-53 and subsequent. I don't have exact pricing but something like this maybe? FX-53: $800 - $900 Motherboard: $150 - $200 1 Gig Memory: $400 - $450 Graphics card: $550 - $600 Oh...I'm over. I dunno...I would have to do more research on the components pricing. I think the system your talking about may be more like $2500 minimum minus one harddrive and the CRT. Correct me if I'm wrong...I've been out of the new PC building arena for a while.
The FX-53 is nice, but everything based on Socket939 is WAY overpriced right now. The performance gains over the regular AMD64 chips don't justify spending the extra $500 on a chip in my opinion. I'm planning to get an AMD 64 3200+ for around $270, then blow all that money I saved on a top notch graphics card. Of course I'm on a bit more of a budget, so if you got money to burn then by all means do it! Your prices listed are a bit high though....you can get a gig of high quality memory for around $300, and the motherboard should only cost around $125. Also, Frye's is nice since they are local, but I buy most of my stuff through newegg.com. Their prices are great and the customer service is unbeatable. If you really want to stay local though, check out axiontech.com. They are located near 59 and the belt, and have some great prices.
Surfguy - memory will be cheaper, around $275 - $300. Use newegg and pricewatch. I think you can come in around $2,200 for that system described above. If it makes you feel better, if you bought that thing from Dell, it would probably cost you $4,000++ Harrisment - 939 is great for FX chips because you can use unregistered memory, (cheaper, better) unlike the only other FX option, socket 940. But you are right about paying a premium for them - the AMD 64 3800 tests about the same as the FX-53(on anandtech) Either way you go - fastest most Doom 3 ready comp on the planet. This is the first time where games are more advanced then computers. With the Eye Candy turned on to the max in Far Cry, that game destroyed my system - AMD XP 3200, HIS 9800 Pro, gig Corsair XMS.
See this is why I like Consoles better. My biggest problem is tearing open that plastic film they ut around the game....I dont have to worry about spending a few thousand dollars for a new computer.
Those of us that do it don't 'worry' about it. Lots of us enjoy computers and putting it together ourselves in many cases. And they are talking serious high end rigs...you very rarely have to spend a 'few thousand dollars' to get a PC already stronger then any console out there.
Penny-Arcade shares my view/frustration with PC games. It's gotten better the last few years and this is the first major jump in the last 4 but I'm still pissed to spend 2000 dollars on a system to play a 50 dollar game and still not have it run optimally cuz it was designed with a different cpu/ram/video card/codec/os in mind.
Dont get me wrong....Im not having a go at people that do put these powerfull PC's togeather. Lord knows I'd do it myself if A0I could afford it an B) I knew hot to do it. I just like the ease of seeing a game I like and not having to wonder if my computer will play it ok. I just throw the CD in and my X-Box of PS2 just plays it without the hassle.
The story of Doom 3 is just the first Doom game all over again, right? I hope Half-Life runs well on my 9800 pro, I know they say that's the best to have, but I think they mean the 256 one, mine is 128. My card has serious issues with BF Vietnam, the damn game crashes constantly. Anyways, I've seen some videos of HL2 and I can't wait. One of my favorite things I saw is that you can throw this grenade with a pheremone or something that causes these alien bugs to attack other bad guys. The use of vehicles will be sweet too.
HL2 is going to be awesome. Those videos look just amazing, especially the Counter Stike source demos. I think a 9800 pro will run the game fine, just not at full detail. When they were supposed to originally release the game that was the best card on the market, so I don't think you will have any problems. I'm debating myself which card to get. I think I'll wait until we have a solid release date for HL2, so I can get the lowest price possible.
Whats the rest of your computer specs? Depends on processor and RAM too, but a 9800 pro should run Half Life 2 great if you don't play at high resolutions (1280*768 and above will probably force you to take down eye candy to medium) Valve is an ATI backer - their games are optimized to play with ATI cards and drivers. Battlefield Vietnam is a sure fire crasher Oski, most everyone has problems.
I've got a 2.8 ghz Pentium 4 and 500 mb of RAM. I guess I should buy some more RAM to get it up to a gig and I can't set my resolution that high so that's not a problem either.
My new system specs for my home job custom PC (subject to change) for the Doom 3 revolution: AMD Athlon 64/3400+ 1 MB L2 Cache ASUS K8V Deluxe Motherboard - Socket 754 1 Gig DDR400 Memory(brand undecided...maybe Mushkin) EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT 256 MB Western Digital 74 GB 10,000 RPM SATA Hard Drive Win XP Home Case(black) w/ minimum 420 Watt Power Supply(undecided) NEC 8x Black Dual Layer DVD +/- Drive, Model ND-2510A I will probably use with a KVM switch to utilize my existing keyboard/mouse/monitor until such time as I want to buy a new display device/monitor and set up a (wireless) network. Total cost: $1500-$1800 Any comments? Surfguy
That is going to be GREAT! The only thing is that graphics card eats power and if the PSU can't handle the load, the system might get a little unstable. PSU is one of the most important build parts -don't let anyone tell you differently. Look at Antec, Enermax or Thermaltake around 480 watts - will probably run around $60 - $80 but will have solid rails. After that, it is pretty much my dream system. I wish I could get my hands on the GT>> Here is ID software's official Doom 3 benchmarks DOOM III It shows the Ultra and GT hands down beating the X800 XT I think im going with Nvidia this round. For the memory - Mushkin, OZ or Corsair. All great choices - I like OZ and Corsair. Also, the clawhammer core AMD 64 would be my choice also - 1mb of L2 cache is better then 200 extra MHz. Also maybe an after market heatsink, chips will get hot playing them games>> http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-036&depa=0 Sorry - my hobby is building computers, I will leave you alone now
Guys, We have always pushed the envelope in the PC world. It is no fun to make games for last years technology, it is more fun to take your chances on the bleeding edge. The guys at ID are in a unique position of getting to make games THEY want to make, and if you have to upgrade in order to play their game, so what? We have plenty of games out there that are for mass market that are LCD system games. I am glad that Doom 3 and Half life 2 etc..etc..etc.. are not those games. DD
Yea...I hope I can find the GT video card. It seems to be in short supply although newegg is supposed to get some soon. I haven't looked elsewhere as of yet. I hope this isn't such a hot item that it's not available anywhere. So, you don't think the stock fan/heatsink that comes with the CPU will be enough? I figured it would do fine unless I'm overclocking at which point I may want to upgrade. Thanks!
