They got 4 prospects, including their current shortstop Hanley Ramirez (Boston's top overall prospect last year) and 3 pitchers. They also were able to dump Lowell's contract. Say what you want about the Marlins' style of management, but when they do these firesales, they tend to get some pretty good prospects in return.
Sincerely, Oscar Henriquez, Manny Barrios & Mark Johnson. Seriously people, this is 100% fantasyland crap originating on Kirk Bohls's Statesman blog. The only sportswriter who regularly pulls more crap straight out of his arse than Ricky Justice is Kirk Bohls. He's a hack. Says a ton about SI that they even printed it.
I would like to sit here and dream for a little while. Dtrain and Andruw Jones in Astros uniforms... *sigh*
After last nights game it showed why we don't need Willis and we do need to add a bat. Andruw Jones would be ideal, but would cost several top end prospects. I say we go with Bobby Abreu.
but so would abreu; difference is jones is appreciably better, three years younger and, at least this year, cheaper, plus signed thru next year (not sure of abreu's status. i would offer wandy and jimerson for abreu, not much more. vastly overrated and on the downside of his career. i'd rather call up pence and see what he can do than waste time, effort or money on bobby abreu. i mean, we already have bobby abreu - answers to, "preston." btw, saw this: "This same source told me that the White Sox are "close" to acquiring Andruw Jones from the Braves; the price would be Brian Anderson and young pitching. That deal would also make sense for both sides. Jones would certainly be a sweet pickup for the White Sox. Brian Anderson has been terrible this year, but he was the organization's best prospect entering the 2005 season according to Baseball America. The Sox have some decent if not spectacular pitching prospects, so this one isn't out of the realm of possibility. Plus, there's always Brandon McCarthy." if there's any validity to this... brian anderson and some pitching???? the astros have to at least make the call. (tangent: same article has this: "The Cubs are reportedly "in discussions" with the Yankees for a deal in which the principals would be Aramis Ramirez...and Alex Rodriguez...This deal, if it happens, might also include Jacque Jones, and other lesser players including prospects on both sides.")
But Preston doesn't lead the league in OBP like Abreu does. Abreu is getting on base at a ridiculous .440 clip and that's also 100 points higher then Jones. Abreu's power is slipping which is why we can get a good deal on him, but he still possesses gap power to drive in runs.
I just noticed these two blurbs from kffl.com. I don't know how reputable the site is, but Yahoo cites them every once in a while so I'm going to assume they're halfway legit.
what a worthless rumor. sure take our trash. nothing like this is every going to happen. this is stupid
