Don't think even JVG could put together 53 wins in the current western conference

    "you" are missing ;)

You don't think. That's it. We don't care how you think.

How do you know, seriously? How?
As usual the case, people who have no idea love to talk.

BTW, Ponzi is dismissed by Chinese league, great value if you pick him up :p
btw, Bobby Jackson isn't the one who got us Ron, it was the pick. We can throw in some other ones for all Sactown care.

As to who plays better under JVG or Rick, it starts with your best plays. Bench guys have relatively less impact. Now go back and do the math.

...and it's still mostly the same scouts on board. landry was identified by dean cooper while cd was still gm. scola would've been a move where he placed all his trust in the rockets scouting dept since he's said he hasn't figured a way to decipher how euro stats translate to the nba.

jvg straight off the bat handicapped himself with his personal roster choices. jvg pushed to sign charlie ward, who les didn't want on the team, as his starting point guard. ward played only played 14 games before retiring and was on the books for two seasons.

then there's the stricklands, oakleys, ryan bowens, and andre barrett. barrett was an undrafted rookie who impressed jvg (iirc jvg spends his summers in ny) during the knicks summer workouts/training camp.

It was way more than just Donte Greene and this year's pick. At the time of the trade, (Bobby-Bonzi) many Rockets fan were disappointed. Morey traded for Bobby because of his contract value. It was a 5-6 million expiring contract, which the Kings are looking for.

Hell... they dumped John Salmons and Brad Miller for nothing as well as giving away Mike Bibby.

It's funny JVG fans keep complaining JVG didnt have enough talents. When JVG kept traded everyone away for some old Knicks or veterans that's 2 years away from their retirements and with chronic injuries, I can't see how you could get talents.

When JVG had a choice between Padgett, Jacobsen(?), and Azubuike, JVG picked Padgett and then after a few games, JVG buried Padgett on the bench before Padgett got dumped. How could you have talents?

Steve Novak was only good for garbage minutes under JVG but Adelman could use Steve Novak for situational circumstances to win a couple of games. That's a big difference in utilizing the players you have.

I remember in a JVG debat thread some years back, a JVG fan told me even Larry Johnson was a scrub under JVG. That's so funny. That JVG fan probably didnt even know LJ.

Adelman is playing Brooks and Wafer. These 2 dudes wont get too many playtime under other coaches. I think they are both scrubs. But Adelman makes them effective. It's amazing.

This team has more talent than the 06-07 team and JVG won 52 with that roster.

Its true this team has better talent than the JVG team but talent like Scola, Landry and Brooks were developed under Adelman. JVG didn't like playing rookies and was forced into playing Head and Hayes do to injuries. We've seen how well they have developed. JVG didn't like playing Euroleague players see, Boki and V-Span, so there's some question whether Scola would've have gotten the playing time under JVG if he had this team.

Also to the argument that the JVG teams over achieved while the Adelman teams underachieved considered that without Yao last year Adelman still got another 8 games in a row and took two games from the Jazz in the playoffs including one at Salt Lake. Also just glancing at the last JVG year you also see losses to weak teams like the pre-Garnett Celtics.

Finally regarding the fronting defense on Yao this was a problem that JVG dealt with too and a frequent complaint on this board then also.

What are you talking about??? When have McGrady and Yao ever been healthy??? When has anyone on the Rockets been HEALTHY FOR A SEASON!!!!!. JVG basically won 50+ season twice with 2 guys. 2 injured guys. JVG and RA just have different coaching style and had different guys on their roster.

RA is a good coach & has done a fine job putting this team together.

And he will do a ever better job leading us into the second round! :)

FALSE. You can't claim this team has more talent without a healthy TMac. The 06/07 roster may have been more talented overall because TMac was playing well that season, and Yao played 48 games.

Maybe because JVG likes defensive minded players? Did you ever think twice about why JVG gave Ryan Bowen so many minutes?

People are quite happy about Von Wafer's play this season, but under JVG, there is no guarantee Wafer would have gotten the minutes he has.

Forget JVG, we have RA right now and there's nothing more to it.

However, a interesting point brought up by a guy in the blog of Jonathan Feigen about the two time-outs RA called. The ESPN reporter mentioned in BOTH cases, RA did not call for a play or anything, just said they should stay positive. What kind of coaching is that ??

I really believe RA is more fitted as a mentor / counselor who can only suggest something or motivate people, but not a coach. A coach tells players what to do, calls for plays and benches people that do not perform. I'm beginning to lose serious faith in RA, although he has done a good job, it's not good enough. At least JVG called plays and maximized the little talent he had, RA seems to just be satisfied with a bit of hustle and winning a few games.

The Rockets should seriously think about another coach like Avery Johnson, because the team needs discipline. Maybe that way Artest can stay and be put in check, because believe me: AJ would kick Artest's ass and is not afraid of Ron-Ron

MadMax's Coaching Tip of the Day:

Hey, you guys might want to practice some plays of what you can do with the ball if Yao is fronted.

Stay in school, kids. That's my assist...to you.

No - it was because Hayes was the best available player that season. In case you have been in a cave, the Rockets PF situation was a graveyard of broken dreams and failed hopes since Charles Barkley retired. -(Eddie Griffin, Maurice Taylor, Stromile Swift....etc.)

If you can think of somebody who was better, on the roster, at that time, please let me know.

Otherwise, it was not until recently that they acquired two decent PF's.

Yes, I thank you for bringing this up.

In fact I studied it extensively once in the past when somebody tried to bring up this weak sauce, and posted about it (no search function, I would dig it up if so.)

Of all the head coaches in Ryan Bowen's career, Jeff Van Gundy was the coach that played him the fewest minutes per game - playing him for about 9.4 mpg - substantially below his career average of 12.6mpg. In fact, in his 9 year NBA career, only once did Bowen play less MPG than he did during his two seasons in Houston.

See for yourself if you don't believe:

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bowenry01.html

there's no guarantee that he wouldn't either. Luther Head's rookie season just called....

so, code_red, do you have any other terrible arguments to make or are we done here?

He wouldn't have made the team. If Azibuike couldn't make a team that was supposedly so bereft of talent, there's no way a guy like Wafer makes a team with 5 guys already under contract and ahead of him on the depth chart at his position.

Yes, totally agreed. RA underachieved this year. last year there's new coaches and new players. But this year they only add Ron. And It is a mistake to let AB start. They should win 60+

Azubuike didn't make the team precisely because the Rockets were weak in other areas. If you recall, the 2007 team had boatload of 2/3 players and nothing anywhere else McGrady and Head (who was actually good back then) at shooting guard, followed by Kirk Snyder, and in theory ('cept he was too fat) Bonzi, as well as Spanoulis who was too sh-tty to play PG - all of whom were on guaranteed deals.

In hindsight, he would have been a nice player to keep. In reality, the Rockets big men rotation that year was a creaking mess after Yao, consisting of an NBDL team of Dikembe, Hayes, Howard, Padgett, Novak and Tsaklidis. So yeah keeping a 5th string swingman instead (esp. after Yao got hurt) was the natural move- unfortunately, only JVG's virulent hatred of rookies prevented it.
