You haven't seen Ross' body of work, then. He pretty much brought the Roast back from the dead. There's a reason he is the roastmaster.
yeah that's why i think even though it was true, it was fairly classless. the joke he made was lame and 1996 (a sabrina the teenage witch joke?), and she just made a little joke back. it reminded me of when stan van gundy said shaq flopped and then shaq basically tried to call out his whole career as a coach and called him the master of panic. in both instances, one person basically playfully squirted the other with a water gun, and then the second person pulled out a bazooka and tried to kill the other person. it seems even worse for kimmel because they apparently had her on the show. why have someone on and then make fun of them not having had much of a career, especially given that you probably have plenty of people on who aren't all that relevant, and it's not as if you're an A-list celebrity and will be for all eternity, you're just on top now. if she had been saying all his jokes were lame or unfunny and basically called out his career, then i could see this comeback. edit: and another vote for giraldo as the best on the CC roasts. although gilbert gottfried on the bob saget roast is probably my favorite segment from any of the roasts.
It's pretty fair game, and basically the only reason she's even on Dancing with the Stars. She didn't really make a joke back, either, she genuinely took offense to him mentioning the only thing of significance she's done in 10-15 years, or ever.
This is true. He was on one of Bill Simmons' podcasts a couple months back talking about how they got the roasts going again. He also talked a little about Gottfried. It was pretty interesting.
Put me down for thinking Jeffrey Ross is the best of the roasters. It's a shame it seems that is all that guy is good at doing because that is the ONLY thing I ever see him involved with. But he brings it, EVERY time. I think he was the guy that originated the line "I wouldn't **** her with Bea Arthur's dick" which I've heard repeated so many times since then.
I'm in the Greg Giraldo camp as the best roaster. He absolutely kills it every time out. Ross brought the format back to life and deserves all the credit in the world for that. But I personally believe over the past several years Giraldo has been upstaging him at these roasts. I have yet to see a Giraldo comedy special though. I think my DVR recorded one from Comedy Central many months ago - but I haven't checked it out. I saw Ross' latest standup (something about New Jersey in the title) - it was average at best - though the end where he has this fat dude come up and accompany him on piano was drop dead funny.
Prior to the Roasts, Comedy Central would have these "shorts" with him, right before they did same with Chappelle and Jim Breuer. I still recall thinking "why are these guys getting these and others aren't?" Like CC was pimping them out much like VH1 pimps out "artists you need to know." That said, he was funny. Ross would be on a stage with "ROSS" in the background in the same font KISS used to come out with. At the time he was known for his poems. I still remember this one: "I miss her sometimes" Yesterday I ran into my old girlfriend Then I put the car in reverse and ran into her again I "miss" her sometimes
A few years back I remember seeing some Giraldo standup during some Comedy Central special featuring Dane Cook. He was a lot funnier than Dane Cook, but yeah thats not saying much.
I love Ross & Giraldo. Ross is my favorite, mostly because i've known him for so long. His poems always get me. I loved the old Drew Carey Roast where Ross states: "Drew Carey looks like Barney Rubble and Buddy Holly had a baby...and then peed on it."
