What I don't get is those who are defending Bush's DUI by saying "at least he didn't hurt anybody". Like that somehow makes him a more responsible person than DUI drivers who did hurt or kill someone?

This may not be an issue to some of you here but for the millions of Americans who have lost a loved one to a drunk driver it could be a big factor in their personal decision.

You are quite correct about the acting morally superior, of course. I just get annoyed hearing the old "bringing integrity back to the White House" speech over and over that basically is trying to tie Clinton's "indiscretions" to Gore.

As for the father factor, you're also right that they both had help. I just think Bush needed it a lot more [IMG] .

That just leaves the other major issue, Bush is an idiot! [IMG]
As much as I like to poke fun at Bush, I cannot argue with your last statement. When I personally vote for Gore, it won't be based on personality, "character" (whatever that means in politics), or even the fact that Bush is a moron (well, okay . . . maybe a little bit because of he's a moron [IMG] ), but because I fundamentally disagree with Bush on the vast majority of the issues.

As for the topic of this thread, I really doubt that the 24 yr old DUI really will sway voters that have already made up their minds anyway. As for those that haven't made up their minds, . . . well, if they don't know by now, they probably would have just decided by flipping a coin anyway [IMG]

Jeff, great post. I have always felt the same way. Local are far more important - even down to local schoolboard elections. they determine what kids will be reading, etc.

    MC Mark,

Jeff is nothing special, he talks too much! [IMG]

I agree with you as well. Houston, but more importantly Texas, has no real sense of communinty. Even in an international city like Houston, most have very provincial ideals and mindsets. It is unfortunate.

Since I had the pleasure of living in Paris for a while, I was able to see something a little different. Sure, they had their own problems, but had a much deeper sense of community.

For example, in the winter they had vans to go around looking for homeless people. They would ask them if they wanted to go into a shelter. If so, they would take them, if not, they would continue on.

The people paid for this and did not complain! They wanted to, it seemed natural. Even the more conservative leaning raised no objections..

    rimbaud,

That would never happen here. America has this undying obsession with making sure that they have more money than they could ever dream of spending.

I just want to make it clear that I'm very, very happy for George Bush that he has been able to overcome his problems, if in fact he has. I just don't enjoy the hypocrisy on both sides when stuff like this does come up. If you honestly believe that George Bush and the Republicans would sit on this kind of information before a very tight presidential race, you're deceiving yourself.

I also don't like the fact that he gets away with everything (lying in interviews, lying under oath in the funeralgate mess), but no one bothering to talk about it, and if someone tries, it's just out of hatred or politics.

I could care less about a 24 year-old DWI, it's just that Dubya's not been to willing to talk about crap in his past, and when he mentions anything, it looks like it's a lie.

Last night I found out on Fox News and today on CNN that Bush in fact did not lie about his arrest. The incident with the DMN reporter was off the record. When Bush said in regards to being arrested 'wait a minute, let me think about this', the reporter said that he may have been about to change his story to include the arrest and amend the date, but his adviser stepped in. The reporter did not include this in the DMN, nor was any of the questioning ever intended to be included in the newspaper. There is no evidence that he lied about an arrest. Just reporting what I saw on the news. It was also noted that the source in Maine had held on to this information for 4 months prior to leaking it.

Wait a minute...as I'm typing this, Bush is on CNN saying "I guess it depends on what the definition of 'DUI' is". I take it all back.

Did GW Bush make a big deal about Clinton's pot usage? Then I don't see how your assertion applies to him. Who are 'each of you'? Not all of us are partisans.

    Worth repeating...

Rudy was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He didn't get a DUI.

Good post Jeff. Oh, and you too, Almu [IMG] (seriously).

Gets away with everything! LOL. I find that funny coming from a Clinton/Gore supporter.

What part of having a drinking problem until 1986 don't you understand. I don't see the lie. How eager was Clinton to talk about his rape of Juanita Broderick?

And I saved the best for last! This is my favorite! May I ask why you forgot to include the elderly and children? They're all screwed! Bush is going to destroy every disadvantaged group, not just a few! I mean I know for a fact that Bush hates women and minorities, just HATES them. I hear he's proposing to lock them all up! Congratulations! It's people like you that are responsible for the emphasis on the 10 second sound byte in politics...you obviously buy into it!

Wasn't the original guy saying it was a public program, though, that went out finding the homeless people? My understanding is that these are generally private organizations and people engaging in this sort of behavior. These groups may get some grants and other forms of government funding, but it's not a direct this-for-that sort of thing.

I know that in Dallas there are people who drive around bringing food to the homeless and giving them information about where the shelters are, etc. But it's not a government program.

    TheFreak,

My wife is going to kill me if we don't go eat soon, but I did want to respond to your quotes, which were in response to some of mine (horrible grammar, I'm sure, but all of my heroes are politicians).

They left the conversation, IMO (obviously), with a misunderstanding that they did not want to clear up. Just another way to read it.

Cute, but you do know that this is the guy that said "no we didn't have a conversation" (after being called on his perjury)... "ohhhhh, we talked, but we didn't have a conversation" (all under oath). His trial date is sometime in April of next year???

My last point about the 'pot usage' thing was merely a call to those people that criticized Clinton early in his presidency on moral grounds. My mother, et. al., were particularly enraged by his admitted pot smoking. Perhaps this doesn't apply to everyone else, but to those people... I merely ask where their criticisms are of someone w/ the same baby-boomer habits as Clinton (though Clinton did actually get a real job before he was 40, etc. etc.).

Though we disagree TheFreak... all my best.

They do the same thing here in New York. I can't tell you the many kinds of unsolicited acts of kindness I have seen here.

I agree with you about Bush not being forthtight about his past while preaching about "bring back integrity".

All that said, the powers that be have deemed that Dubya will win. I pity women, gays, minorities and the poor for the next few years.

God, I keep having this vision of Bush at some big head of state dinner in Europe. When he opens his mouth, can't you just see these people looking at each other and rolling thier eyes. [IMG]

    Freak,

You can slam me all you want but it doesn’t change the facts.

    Texas

50th in spending on teacher's salaries
49th in spending on the environment
48th in per-capita funding for public health
47th in delivery of social services
    42nd in child-support collections
41st in per-capita spending on public education
5th in % of population living in poverty
1st in air and water pollution
1st in % of poor working parents without insurance
1st in % of children without health insurance
1st in executions (average 1 every 2 weeks for the 5 years of Bush as Governor)

I think I can form my own opinion without sound bites.

    mrpaige,

The following url is a complete list of social programs ran by the city of New York. And yes while there are private entities that provide these services, the city takes responsibility for quite a few.

    mc mark,

Don't you realize that you're not allowed to talk bad about Texas, no matter how true everything you mentioned is?

Achebe -- man, you eat late. [IMG]

I don't know anything about the funeral-gate thing, so I can't comment. I'm not here to defend Bush ( I've already said I'm not even voting for him), I just get tired of the one-sidedness. I try to provide another viewpoint and even things up. True, I probably don't do as good a job as someone who is actually informed could do (BK, where are you?), but I guess I'll just keep having to make a fool of myself until that person shows up.

mc mark -- those numbers don't mean anything to me. Not only have you obviously chosen only the stats that will defend your 'position', but you have no way of proving that any of those are the result of Bush. The Texas legislature has been controlled by Democrats for ever. I find it funny that many will say that the Texas governor has no power, and then they'll turn around and point out questionable conditions in Texas and try to pin them on Bush. You can't have it both ways.

Freak, those stats disturb me as a Texan, not as a Democrat or Republican. I could care less who's responsible, it just needs to change.

I just don't think that Bush can say that he's been a very effective governor because of this stuff.
