IOW, it sounds to me like you want some reassurance that this mgmt team will be more adept at finding good role players than the last one was. And that this move doesn't really signal that for you because it involves a player that the old regime already yo-yo'd through here.

Why is trading Howard for James NOT a sign that things can turn around? If nothing else, they got a better backup point guard.

You forgot to mention that it was JVG who caused the injury to Ralph Sampson that led to the end of his career. It was also JVG, not Kobe, who was responsible for running Shaq out of LA. I've also heard rumors that he was behind the breakup of Jordan's marrage but to date I haven't been able to confirm or deny them.

I concur completely. Think of how much further along this team would be if they had actually followed your advice and drafted some basketball players during some of those years in the lottery.

I think it's a good trade for the Rockets. Now, it's time to deal Alston and go for PF.

NBA Comparison: Jumaine Jones

Strengths: Strong on the block, but not as tall and/or powerful as NBA PF's…Has a nice set of low post moves to score on the block…Solid rebounder…A good leaper with long arms...Stronger than most NBA SF's in the post…A decent low post defender, rather crafty…Has quick hands…Decent passer, but will turn the ball over...Very aggressive and is not afraid of contact…A hard worker who will get dirty on the floor .

Weaknesses: Weak on the perimeter…Not very quick or fleet of foot…Poor ball handler…Needs to really improve his jumper from 18 feet out…Doesn't defend well in space, a real liability on the outside.

Very similar to NBA journeyman Jumaine Jones…seems to be a couple inches and a few pounds shy of being an NBA big man, and half a step slow and a little stiff to play on the perimeter…he still is a very good basketball player…rebounds well, and has solid offensive moves…can hit out to 20 feet, and has some solid moves on the blocks…a smart basketball player, and very tough with a great heart…good offensive footwork on the outside and on the blocks…has a solid handle for a F, and can take bigger players off the dribble from the outside…a solid defender, but nothing spectacular…quick hands allow him to steal the ball from big men not used to handling…moves well without the ball on O…has been the team leader for Ole Miss seemingly since he stepped onto campus…a physically mature player whose body and game have not made great strides since their freshman year, but he has always been a solid player

Short and Sweet: You know what you get, someone whose gonna be a journeyman off the bench at best, he's a solid basketball player, smart, and can score, but he's just not big enough, or quick enough to make a strong impact. His game and body are almost exact replicas of Jumaine Jones, although Reed may be more polished coming out, and is also tougher with a better head.

Notes: Came into Mississippi and quickly became key member of the team. Listed at 6'8, but that's questionable…He's strong, and in excellent condition…Very cut physically…Has been a low post player at Ole Miss, but will likely have to adjust to the combo forward and play on the perimeter…A two-time All-SEC and John Wooden Award candidate.

Rockets acquire James, Reed by trading Howard to Minnesota

HOUSTON -- The Rockets are turning to a familiar face to provide some much-needed help in their backcourt.

Mike James, who made a pit stop in Houston during the 2004-05 season, will resume his career with the Rockets after the franchise traded Juwan Howard to the Minnesota Timberwolves Thursday to acquire the veteran point guard. Houston also received reserve forward Justin Reed in the deal.

The move brings another ballhandler to Houston's roster who can create for himself off the dribble and fills the team's need for more veteran depth in the backcourt.

"We are excited to have Mike back," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. "He is a proven player who will add championship experience and scoring punch to our team. Juwan has been a true professional and a key contributor to our franchise on and off the court. We wish him well."

James, 31, is a gritty veteran who can play either guard position and has shown solid shooting range. During his six-year career, the guard has averaged 11.5 points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds. He is a 38.2 percent career shooter from three-point range.

With the Rockets, James became a reliable scorer off the bench in 27 games. He scored in double figures 16 times and had a strong postseason for the Rockets by canning 46.8 percent of his shots in Houston's 2005 first round series against Dallas.

Following that season, the Rockets traded him to Toronto for Rafer Alston. James had a career season with the Raptors in 2005-06, averaging 20.3 points and knocking down 44.2 percent of his three-point attempts. The Rockets pursued James as a free agent this past summer along with several other clubs before the point guard signed with the Timberwolves.

James, who is building a home in the Houston area, will be joining a franchise that went into the offseason seeking more backcourt depth. The team relied almost solely on Alston at point guard during the 2007 playoffs with the veteran logging 44.1 minutes in the seven-game series.

Reed, 25, will join James in Houston. The fourth-year forward, who spent past 1 1/2 seasons in Minnesota, appeared in 41 games with the Timberwolves this season. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 2.6 points and 1.1 rebounds in 7.8 minutes.

Howard, 34, started 38 games for the Rockets last season, but primarily provided veteran leadership off the bench. He averaged 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds.
