Getting rid of Howard's contract without picking up any additional years makes this trade a winner, if I'm not mistaken James has the option to void a year or two of his contact which could make things even better. If nothing else, the trade opens up room on the roster for a younger PF with upside, even if James only sees the end of the bench.

Its a solid move that could end up being a great move if the Rockets can find a way to get a starting PG and move James to the bench. It seems unlikely that any other parts will move in this, but maybe McCants or Jaric could figure into something with a third team

I'm not sure I like this talk about "other players" in the deal. Let's say we obtain another T-Pup player (a NON-core player on the team) for one of our own. Who would it be? Mediocre Mark Madsen with 3 years left on his deal? Trenton Hassell with 2 ridiculous years on his deal (and a player option for a third year)? Ricky "Knucklehead" Davis? Marko freaking Jaric, who is owed $27 million over the next 4 years?

I've got a better idea: Let's just take James and leave the rest of Minnesota's roster alone. Why bail out McHale (Forbes' #1 GM!) if it's not necessary?

I'm puzzled. Aren't the Wolves trading James to the Rockets? Shouldn't they be paying the fee for trading James?

    We picked up 2 years....

i believe juwan had an option for 07/08

Mike James has a option for 09/10

thats what i figured...i thought the whole point of the trade kicker was that so the team that signed you has less reason to trade you cuz then they'd have to pay you an extra 15% of the salary......they should be punished for promising him security and then trading him...

    ... totally expected ... step #1.

It's just a matter of time before Howard runs out of gas, although he has done a very good job of keeping himself in good shape, and has been a great locker room presence. He's at his highest value he'll ever be, so now is the time to get something for him.

James will be a valuable piece for us. If it wasn't for the bad chemistry he had, MIN would never trade him for Howard. But, since this is where James really wanted to go, this will turn out well. James will be valuable depth at both the 1 and 2, and a great 6th man and spark off the bench, ala Ginobli, and Howard will be a valuable backup and veteran influence on MIN younger players.

I don't expect James to start at PG, nor do I expect Alston either. I would think we'll be looking for a starting PF and PG in trade or MLE signing.

But, this was the first totally expected upgrade this off-season. Glad they didn't screw it up.

He isn't a junk player but I don't think the Wolves will give him up easily.I don't want to take any more contracts from them. Their 2nd round pick isn't a high one but I wouldn't mind getting it for JL3.

    good move.

although I'm a little worried, to fill the gap at 4, we might have to trade Battier. I really like this man in our team.

    gosh.

I am on vacation in South East Asia at the moment. Hard to get internet on the move but when I heard about Juwan leaving Rockets I had to hunt down the nearest interenet location. :D

    OMG!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE CURSE IS GONE!!!! (holding my breath for official news)

Time to clean the house. Get rid of Gundy's slow footed pets.

The Wolves, for some strange reason have always wanted Juwan Howard. (silly McHale)

They had offered Cassell for Howard initially but JVG did not want to part with his pet Juwan.
Then, last season at the trading deadline, Howard and Mike James swap was looked at.

Not surprising that right after Gundy is gone, Howard gets shipped out immediately. Lucky for us, McHale is still around to, not only take Howard, but actually give us a player in return who can contribute.

Mike James will be used by Adelman in a Bobby Jackson way. He will most probably come off the bench as a sparkplug, and score some points. Mike James is a very similar player to Bobby Jackson. Even the personalities seem to match.

Excellent trade for Rockets from a Rockets fan's perspective.
Excellent trade for Rockets from a Timberwolves fan's persective.
