Avery is overrated. That team has as much talent now as it ever has but when you ride guys and whine 24/7 they are going to tune you out eventually. There also needs to be some substance, some real Xs and Os. Avery appeared to lack that. Mavs are going to hire D'Antoni if he leaves Phoenix. That squad needs to score big because they won't ever be a truly great defensive team.
That reminds me of Larry Brown's speech after finally winning with Detroit. I never liked Larry Brown, but that was a heck of an interview. He actually brought a tear to my eye. as a huge JVG fan, please do not go to Dallas.
Cuban is single-handedly destroying what he built in Dallas because he cannot keep his ego in check and thinks he knows more about basketball than the basketball people he hired. The Mavs are in for a tough road and an even bigger fall if he doesn't realize how to step back and let the good basketball people he has hired run things. IMO, Avery is going to wind up in San Antonio as Popp's designated replacement when Popps retires.
I remember that too, he was classy as crap. He began with something like "well first of all I am grateful to be coaching a team that Rick Carlisle did such a great coaching before I got here." Awesome.
Question: Does Cuban act more of an owner/GM? I know he helped the franchise get out of the gutter when he took over as owner. But wasn't he behind the Kidd trade? Now they are stuck with a 35-year-old starting point guard who makes $20m a year and not worth but $8m. I question Cuban's real knowledge and his decision-making, if I were a Dallas fan I'd want Cuban to separate himself more from big time decisions.
agree, Joey's mancock will be the new coach of the spurs when pop goes dantoni or wutever (he doesnt really coach just talks) will be perfect for the soft mavs or the mcdonalds nuggets JVG is perfect for chicago
DUDE! Avery wanted that trade. Cuban didn't. Cuban relented and gave Avery what he wanted. The Mavs are out in the first round - again - and Cuban has every right to be pissed off at Avery.
I'm sure it won't be the first time that Cuban's $$$ changed someones principles. JVG has said he doesn't want to coach next year but this would be a great opportunity for him, the Mavs are not rebuilding, they just need a piece or two. JVG might be able to get this team to the finals again and he lives in Texas. If I was Cuban, I would definitely approach JVG and see if a Larry Brown type of deal could persuade JVG to return to coaching.
"No animosity... Great privilege at Dallas..." blah, blah, blah... "Don't want to drag their names through any mud" - on the trade involving Kidd. He's taking the high road. Good for him. On the other hand, I'll be glad I don't have to hear his voice on the radio every week with that squeaky/raspy whine... Ouch. Of course... We may be moving back to the Houston area soon... p.s.- Avery's son was carried out on a stretcher at school today.. in the Woodlands... Avery is on a cell phone headed down there. I had forgotten he lived in the Woodlands.
I like Avery, I think Cuban is jumping the gun. But, whatever, it's the Mavs, and I really hope they get worse. I wouldn't mind having that Bass kid coming to Houston.
Both Phoenix and Dallas are overreacting with the coaching changes. This was a special year in the West and both of those teams made trades. This was not the year to be able to adjust to a trade midway through the season.
