I remember back in high school, we used to ditch during lunch and go to Bennigan's. They used to have a stopwatch they'd give out for their 10-minute guarantee. We stole one somewhere at the beginning of senior year, and we'd set it at 2:30 or the like before we went it. Then we'd get food 0:45 late, pocket the new watch, get our lunch for free, and make it back for fifth period. It was a while ago, but I kind of feel bad now. Hopefully that didn't hurt their bottom line too much...
Cheddar's Disneyland's Blue Bayou at lunch Just to name a couple of places still serving it. Nah... TGI Friday's will more than make up for it. And I'd only go with the minimum required number of pieces of flair if it were me anyway. Also.. watch for places like "Boston's, The Gourmet Pizza" and "Two Rows" to start popping into these places... maybe.
Never tried Steak and Ale. Bennigans was nasty but the Monte Christo was a work of art. Loved those things, but could only handle them a couple of times a year. They were a guilty pleasure
When I moved to Houston in the late 80s, Bennigans was decent. Within 10 years, it had completely gone to garbage. In the late 90s, one of my clients took me to Steak and Ale on a regular basis. Hadn't been there in a long time. I won't miss either place but I wish there was a warning so I could have grabbed one last Monte Cristo. I can feel my arteries harden just thinking about it.
Bennigans has gone downhill, true enough. My fiance notes that, when we were there last week, the silverware hadn't been washed properly, and the time before that they were out of half the stuff we tried to order. The odd thing is that this one (the only one in San Antonio? haven't seen any others) appeared from a distance to be open this evening, though I was just driving by and didn't get a close look. I know all of them haven't closed, though it might be a matter of time. So almost all the Houston ones are gone? I remember in the mid-90's hanging out at the one on Kirby with huge groups from Rice... though it went downhill and we found other hangouts. The restroom was also one of the worst I've ever seen in a restaurant.
not to keep bumping this thread but a co worker made me think of a time when I saw some jazz players in the bennigans down from the old summit, greg foster and I believe chris morris who ended up playing here.
I heard that only the NON-Franchised stores are closing If it is Franchised it may still be open' Rocket River
Am I the only person here who used to go to the Bennigans at 59 and Kirby after home Rockets games and watch Kenny, Mario, Sam, Mr Mean, and sometimes Mad Max show up for cheap beers? I figure once Barkley showed up they learned about strip clubs..... To this day I have no idea why they did this, they made millions, but they were usually there. I guess the same reason Elie used to eat at Miyako so much....proximity to the "office"
