I'm not wishing illness upon anyone, but I could not care any less about Sterling's health situation.
Especially when it is totally normal. One of my fave people from work is retiring this year, and he has prostate cancer. They are trying to figure out whether to operate, radiate, or just wait it out. Some of these cases are so slow growing that you just ignore it. It's just something a bunch of people have to deal with. The more I think about it, if he was involved in releasing this information, I even think less of him. He would need a brain tumor story to excuse what he said -- it was the toomah!
I work in the field of cancer research. Prostate cancer is common and in all likelihood he's had it for years and only just now revealed it to get sympathy. While prostate cancer has terrible consequences for some people, in many cases it grows extremely slowly and has no impact on your life expectancy. Overall, prostate cancer screening is one of the least medically useful cancer tests there is because of this. Given that Sterling is already 80 years old and clearly still has a libido, it's most likely that he has a relatively benign or treatable version. Can't be sure, but the press releases didn't say that he was just diagnosed with cancer. They said he has cancer. That suggests he knew about this a long time ago.
It's not really just what he said recently, it's the history of douchebaggery and POS human being he's been for past years.
It is what it is. I don't think the man is crying for sympathy either. He's a billionaire, pretty sure he would have preferred for his racism to remain anonymous or at least a non-focal point, but now that it is out I'm willing to bet he still doesn't care that much. He could go out with a bang and redeem himself, slightly, by donating all his money to charity, but I severely doubt he's the type of person to do that. He'd probably be more likely to donate his net worth to the KKK out of spite on his deathbed.
Stuff like this is just stupid. He donates to the NAACP and other minority charities. He's a crappy human being, but his views are not remotely close to the KKK. He doesn't think black people should be banished or killed or want a superior white race or anything of the sort. He has enough bad qualities that there's no need to embellish or make up junk to make him out to be even worse a person.
Somebody help him with his condition. But his health and his racist behavior are two different things. He deserves his lifetime ban.
Like you said, most men die WITH prostate cancer and not OF prostate cancer, and it's quite common when you start getting up there in age as a male. Cancer in any form is unfortunate, but I have a feeling this is just a PR stunt to evoke some sympathy for an unrelenting bigot.
Did I say I am happy about him getting cancer? No. I was just pointing out that prostate cancer is so common among old men, it is really not news worthy even with ordinary people. And because it is such a slow growing cancer, it is not something that happened to Sterling recently. The only reason it is in the news NOW is because of Sterling's recent trouble. Am I supposed to feel sorry for him now? I have plenty of cancer deaths happened around me in recent months. I am not going to worry about a guy who can afford to hire a whole hospital crew to take care of him.
This. Sterling hasn't killed anyone, he hasn't lynched anyone. He is an 80 year old man that happens to have biggoted views and has done some very questionable things. Honestly, his racism isn't as big an issue as his dealings as a landlord/slumlord.
Life's greatest battles are overcome with a strong and steady base. For most its family and friends...Sterling is learning the hard way...that at a time he really needs someone the most, there just arent many in his corner.
I didn't say he would donate to the KKK, it was a hyperbole. If you saw his comments, he clearly does not care about his reputation, or at least not enough to try to win public image back. I wasn't trying to create the impression that he would literally donate to the KKK, just that he doesn't care enough about his own reputation, or the African American community that will compel him to redeem himself. He may not HATE black people, but there is an air of ethnic superiority that he believes he has. I'm sure he doesn't individually hate Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, and his side chick because they are black, he just considers them beneath him. Kinda like how a sexist bigot would automatically assume women are inferior, but doesn't HATE them. Its hard to feel sympathy for a guy like that, and in no way should we be obligated to. Sure he didn't act on his racism, but that doesn't give him a free pass from criticism. Neither does him having cancer change that.
My aunt had breast cancer but it didn't turn her into a racist. I hope he beats the cancer but in no way does it lessen the impact of what he said.
His dealings as a landlord/slumlord are intimately tied with his racist views and his general lack of character
I still wouldn't wish it on anyone or trivialize it. Are you going to donate all your money to charity every time you say something insensitive ? No excuse to what he said, but you're ridiculous for even entertaining that expectation of anyone.
