This is the defintion of a lose-lose situation.

Nobody involved (fans, Donaghy, the mob, the NBA, etc) came out ahead on this one.

I am not going to comment on what he deserves. It is what it is. I just hope the league starts officiating games better ...that's the only thing that has any impact on me.

I am not sure he "agreed" to help or was coerced into it. Probably the mob gave him a choice - do it or else.

When you have 4 daughters and you are an NBA ref who got into debt gambling with the mob after you - you are in very big trouble.

Maybe he owed the wrong guy some money.

That guy knows someone who knows someone who owes someone a favor.

He's lucky its only a broken leg. He could have easily been stuffed in a toilet or something.

Have you been in prison? By your comment I would say no. The best way to survive is to mind your own business. There are very few people in my life if I met in prison I would want to do harm to. And I can assure some Ex Nba ref who fixed games is not even a slight consideration on that list. He fixed some games, so what, he is doing his time. he is paying his dues. If I was in prison I might even befriend him. I once slept over a murderes bunk for a month before a new he had murdered someone. And until then I thought he was a nice guy.

If you have 4 daughters you have no business gambling in the first place ;)

He put himself in that situation. It isn't like the mafia walked up to some random ref and said, "You are going to fix games or we will kill you."

That said, I don't think he deserved the beatdown that occured.

Ultimately, NBA basketball is just a game. Not that important, and no one ever deserves to be assaulted over it.

No he doesn't deserve it. But I am pretty sure his book will land him some money significantly more than what he got from being NBA referee. Fair or not, all high profile criminals get that. But then again, you are in deep trouble if you are being screwed by mobsters, no matter how much money you make.

I care just as much about him being assaulted in prison as I do about anyone else. This stuff happens ALL THE TIME.

What he did was wrong, but to get his legs broken for it in the process is ridiculous.

as other have stated . . .this happens all the time
    He is in Prison
    this stuff happens in prison
this is what makes prison a place to avoid

He is no different than any other criminal
why have sympathy for him . . and not the local drug dealer?

Is there any crime you can think of that deserves the person to be Raped?
there are some but not many . . . .

    He got beaten . . in prison . . . it happens

I hope you mean not everybody.
Somebody do deserves cruel punishment and also should be dammned in hell. It's the sympathy toward the criminals that makes the society unsafe. Ive read too many articles that invovles a killer who kills another man/woman after serving 7 years of his 25 years and released early.

    What are you kidding me?

He didn't get beat down as punishment from his sentence. This has nothing to do with his Constitutional Rights.

He got beat down by getting mixed up with the mafia. This guy is lucky he didn't end up wearing cement Nikes in the Hudson River!

Enough with the pity, the guy is a d*** criminal. The mob has its own form of "justice" for there own and anybody who gets mixed up with them.

I'm actually surprised, I believe he's in a pretty low-security facility for non-violent offenders, this isn't exactly "Oz" that he's holed up at. It's no picnic either, but I believe this kind of thing is fairly unsusual at those places.

I found a picture of the "Mob Boss" running the whole show and the one who put out the order to beat Donaghy in order to make sure he knows to keep quiet when he gets out.

Some interesting responses in this thread.

Personally, even if this is some sort of karmic punishment (which is a completely bogus concept, but whatever), it doesn't fit the crime, IMO. Donaghy doesn't deserve this. I feel bad for him. He's paying his dues in prison.

I guess a lot of people here subscribe to the idea that if you do something wrong, you deserve whatever you get coming to you. Compassionate bunch, this board.
