Because in affect you have manipulated the system without explanation to the other team. If you are changing the rules or in your case (calling the rules as written) you have a responsibility to the player and the other team to explain the the change.
no, but you can tell a team, "Hey, your player is breaking the rules and we will start calling him for it now". SIMPLE
How so? I know this isn't exactly groundbreaking news, since it was obvious something was up at the time, but IMO this confirms any doubt that the officials had an unreasonable influence in that series. Like one caller said, you don't single out a specific player during the middle of a playoff series- the refs should call the game like they know how, and if there is a problem, they should be told to watch for it in general. Not be told by their supervisor to "watch Yao Ming to make sure he is not making illegal screens". Illegal screens happen all the time, and not all of them get called. All that did was ensure that Yao be unfairly scrutinized by the officials. If anything, you make those kinds of judgments during the season or offseason when it comes to a specific player
The problem is that teams send in tapes all the time to the league office, there are TONS of calls that are missed every single game. By singling out any one particular player/team is undoubtably favouritism. WE all know that there is a ton of fouls that are let go in the NBA, however what if the league sent out an edict saying that refs should pay particular attention to Kobe and call fouls that happen on Kobe, now only Kobe gets the correct foul calls, all the rest of the players still have to live with missed foul calls. Technically, it was the right decision but practically it is game manipulation.
Yeah, I guess yao and tracy missing those critical free throws in game 5 were rigged too? I also guess the nba and stern didn't want a billion people tuned in to watch yao play any more either? The owner was proactive and sent in a tape like a thousand of other tapes that are sent in to watch players. It wasn't because it was yao, it was because he was setting poor screens and his guards wasn't waiting to set the screen up. Yall need to stop crying. The out of bounds play was a blown call though.
I don't get it...why would the NBA want the Mavs to win over the Rockets? Even if we're talking from the "referee's relationship" perspective, what ref has a good relationship with Mark Cuban? He's the most vocal owner in the league with respect to bashing refs, and the one I would think they'd hate the most. Not seeing the logic behind these "conspiracies."
NBA took some money out of JVG's pocket for bringing this to light. He was protecting the sanctity of them game, trying to uphold truth and honor. REIMBURSEHIMNOW.COM, c'mon Jeff. Do it again.
Its advantageous for the NBA if series extend to seven games. Rockets had an early advantage in the series being up 2-0. It appeared that it might even be a sweep since we were coming home for the next 2. Games 5 and 6 were close, very close, and had some questionable calls pushing the series to seven games. Sadly it was a seventh game in which were blown out.
The more yao plays, the more china watches, the more the nba can charge for sponsorship and rights. So tell me again why would stern want yao in foul trouble and the rockets to lose?
Are you suggesting Mark Cuban is directly paying the referees or the NBA to call things in his favor? Let's just face the facts guys...the main reason we lost is because Jason ****ing Terry played out of his god damn mind as he always does against the Rockets.
Because Mark Cuban complains therefore goes to the media and say's the league wants the Rockets to win because the NBA wants China money.
Rockets lost cause they choked. Yao played soft and Tracy came up short agian. I'll just point out that even though they lost, they were without juwan howard and were never favored to win. No excuse though, you win 2 on the road in 7 game series you should win the series.
Dude. You did see the series, right? If the league said, Concentrate on Yao's this-and-that, then the refs basically made sure that Yao got the benefit of the doubt on NOTHING. The refs didn't want to leave anything to chance that they would fail the Moses Test: receive word from on high, then try to accomplish it. There was a paper-thin margin to work with. When the refs jack with it and throw you off balance, you're gonna lose the momentum.
I dont think they want anyone in particular to win, I think they want the series to go to seven games. There is some evidence to support this, but not a ton.
More information in the book.....LOL! Why would the NBA want the Mavs over the Rox? Houston has larger fanbase. Also Cuban is the main guy thinking the NBA is Against his team. I really can't buy that the NBA is fixed like Donoghy says...when the Spurs continued to win at the time and the more they won the more the Ratings dropped. Obviously at this time the NBA would have been AGAINST the spurs would they not?
What about Finley stripping the ball from Jon Barry when he was about 3 feet out of bounds and the ref standing right there looking at Finley's feet!!!!
