The law did apply. Defamation is a civil offense. The penalty is writing a big check. That's what happened here - whether it would have before or after a trial. There wasn't going to be any other penalty.

Fox News getting completely exposed in court and all their lies, every single on, out in the open instead of the small snippets that were revealed is a major penalty

    instead it’s 790m paid and

I reckon it was unrealistic to expect that the damages would also result in fox news not continuing to broadcast falsehoods about others. Public statements, punitive damages might have resulted in a change in behavior. Instead... hannity, carlson et al will likely report on the settlement with falsehoods.

We don’t know what the entire settlement is yet. Don’t get your panties in a bunch. Apparently the reason dominion wouldn’t settle earlier was because Fox wouldn’t agree to retract their statement.

Some of you act like Dominion works for the public interest instead of their own interest. While they have exposed Fox's lies, which was wonderful, they have a responsibility to their shareholders, not to the public.

One thing you should also keep in mind is that Fox was exposed for their lies, but guess what? Their core consumers keep coming back for more. Their business model might as well be "we deceive, you believe," and they would still be successful. So, if you thought that further revelations would actually rein in Fox's behavior, think again. What might actually do that is a huge settlement, like what just happened.

Admitted telling lies in the privacy of the courtroom? Because I haven’t seen any strong public statement of guilt from them.

this should’ve been all the prominent talking heads on Fox issuing an apology and full out saying they knowingly lied and then saying what the truth is live on air

Fox News being forced to admit their lies and tell the real truth about this whole situation live on air would hurt them with viewers…we already know they think telling the truth is bad for their business which is why they kept pushing this stolen election lie in the 1st place

having to admit to the truth live on air would have further hurt their bottom line…instead they escape by Rupert Murdoch handing over some loose pocket change he found in the couch

    Probably is meaningless too...

Exclusive: Fox investors seek records in possible step toward suing directors

lol, no real admittance of guilt whatsoever

they really closed out the short article with this

The lawsuit, which stemmed from coverage of the post-2020 presidential election, had become media fodder with news outlets closely watching the outcome of the highly publicized legal battle.

Then-President Donald Trump and his allies fiercely challenged Joe Biden's victory in the weeks following the election. Some of them, including members of his legal team, made false and unsubstantiated claims against Dominion Voting Systems and are the subject of separate defamation lawsuits.

"We are pleased to have reached a settlement of our dispute with Dominion Voting Systems," the network said Tuesday in a statement. "We acknowledge the Court’s rulings finding certain claims about Dominion to be false. This settlement reflects FOX’s continued commitment to the highest journalistic standards. We are hopeful that our decision to resolve this dispute with Dominion amicably, instead of the acrimony of a divisive trial, allows the country to move forward from these issues."

I fully expected the only thing, that you hear on Fox News about this, is some re-wording of the above.
