Well, let's put it this way. My last post was phrased badly. With a system that consistantly push your RBs as stars, people like TD (6th round, I believe), Mike Anderson, Tatum and now Mike Bell, etc... can come into systems that make them a main attraction. Portis deal was a great deal for them as they got talent where talents are needed. With low draft choices that become top of the line statistically, other needs could be drawn with the early picks. Moreso, the release of Mike Anderson is a great example of how it could help the other areas. Anderson, their top back last year, was able to be waived as a FA because the system does not require money spent in that area. A cheap RB that produces year in and year out is a very nice asset to have. The other thing is, the system had always ran through cheap offensive linemen and cheap QB solutions as well. Plummer has been nice for them, but the running game and blocking scheme is what made the offense efficient. That Denver team has spent most of their money on their defense and it's based on the idea that the offense can work with any average Joe on their team, with the exception of some receivers (Rod Smith, McCaffrey back then, Lelie recently). The Texans are now spent on offense in a huge way. I expect that DD is not part of the future solution. I just hope they keep AJ and maybe Carr can find himself, assuming that even matters. Here are their transactions for the past few years (Broncos) http://football.about.com/gi/dynami...rts.espn.go.com/nfl/teamtransactions?team=den Also, look at their salaries. The top salaries are to their defense. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/teamSalary?categoryId=67044
I think 10 of the top 12 salaries were defensive. EDIT: sorry, clicked reply instead of edit to add on to my post....
feeling real good about not having Reggie Bush. RBBC thing may just be something special. Sprinkle a bit of DD in game 3+
If it walks like a duck, it's Domanick Davis. Who knows what's going on? If the coaches are inclined to believe that he's wussing out (excuse me, is Dan Riley in the house?), then they can bench him. I really hope not, because we need 3 decent RB's.
This is Kubiak on Morency..."He's got a bad bruise on his lower leg," coach Gary Kubiak said. "As part of being the back, you have to get back on the field." I wouldn't be suprised for one second that the coaches are getting very frustrated w/ DD.
I hope things get straightened out and he is productive again. But, it always worried me to think that DD was going to be the brunt of our running game. I just didn't see him as quite that much impact on the game. I never agreed with the folks who would point to him and say our running game was 'fine'.
Actually he did for week 1 of his rookie season, but that was about it. The reason I know is because he was on my fantasy team, and I remember he carried me to a dramatic victory that week after his Monday night performance.
I loved DD the last few years, but that 43 yd TD that Morency had against St. Louis? DDavis wouldn't have made it. His run would have been 20-30 yds and that LB trailing after Vernard would have caught him. Then, it's a toss up if we finish the drive off or settle for a FG that Brown may or may not hit. Dominick is great at breaking tackles and finding the hole, but if he gets in the open field, he doesn't have the speed to outrun the defense. Morency does, so if VM can develop the rest of his game to be on par with Dominick, then there is no reason to start DD over Morency even IF Davis is healthy.
That's the first thing I thought of when I saw that run. We've seen it a million times. DD breaks through the line and into the secondary...then, instead of turning on the afterburners, he either makes another cut and gets tackled or gets caught from behind. I love DD too, he's got a big heart. But his time may be up. It would be nice if we could trade him for some help in the secondary.
Haven't seen enough of VM or Lundy to know how they are in the passing game - screens, dumpoffs, play-action, blitz pickup; that's just about the only area where DD could bring something to the table that they maybe cannot.
Personally, I'm kind of hoping the days of the 3-yard dumpoff pass to the RB are over. I'm not sure how good DD was at picking up the blitz, but considering how many times Carr ended up on his ASS the last few years, that probably wasn't his greatest strength. But yes, even Kubiak has said that all of our RB's need to improve on that in the worst way.
I hope that DD didn't getting spoiled under Capers. The Bronco game is really going to yield our true progress. The Bronco's are playing against a work in progress younger them.
