Been a decade since ya'll have won a playoff game. Also....there is something else I mean to say.....wait for it...... Oh yeah...now I rememeber! 19-10
The list of cuts was pretty eye opening...Jeff George (no surprise), Charles Rogers, et al...And then, out of nowhere, IR for DD... WHy cut ASmith? Don't we need more backs?
don't hate on a valid regret - the Sports Guy kinda brings up Snoopy's point in his column: "[T]hey passed on the next Gale Sayers (Reggie Bush) to take a project defensive lineman (Mario Williams) and nearly caused a riot with their beleaguered fan base. Then they explained their mind-set by saying, "We need help on defense, we don't need a running back when we already have Dominick Davis," which was like Vanity Fair passing up a chance to run the Suri Cruise photos because they were already locked into a photo spread with Gwyneth Paltrow's second kid. Then they dumped GM Charlie Casserly, which always makes your fans feel good when you follow up the biggest decision in franchise history by immediately firing the guy who made it. Then Davis' knee problems grew worse and worse, culminating in his getting placed on injured reserve this week. Then somebody named Wali Lundy was named the starting running back for Week 1. And this entire sequence unfolded in the span of five months." i'm confident that with Kubiak's blocking schemes, our running game will be much improved, and Carr *should* have more time to throw to our [improved] receiving corps. but the fact remains that Domanick Davis was 85% of the reason why we passed on Reggie Bush and alienated the already low-morale fanbase, and now Davis is too injured to play. Lundy and Morency should have it easy with our improved O-Line, but let's not be foolish - Lundy and Morency are not Reggie Bush. i was almost over this whole issue, until i read the Sports Guy's column. i'm now convinced that Battier will be a great addition to the team, but i will sure as hell wince every time i see Bush with a breakaway TD or huge gain. sigh.
If Reggie Bush is Gayle Sayers without ever playing one meaningful down in an NFL game, why can't Mario be Reggie White?
Ugh...I can't believe I'm being dragged into this tired argument YET AGAIN, but I just can't help it. As has been stated a million times, you do not need a 1st round draft pick to play RB in Kubiak's system. Much less a #1 overall. There are too many examples of this to list (almost every Bronco RB to gain 1,000 yards in a season in the last 10 years). Sure, the Texans stated that DD was A reason (not THE reason) they didn't pick Bush, but that was before training camp started and before Lundy and Morency both emerged and played so well in preseason. Bush's running style does not fit Kubiak's system. To succeed in Kubiak's system, you have to run north and south, not east and west. I'm not saying he sucks because he runs east and west (it clearly served him well in college and most likely will in the pros as well), but he would have had to change his whole style of running to be successful in Houston. Frankly, DD is one of the most overrated players in the Texans short history. Like some others have said in other threads, the guy has NO break away speed at all, which is ESSENTIAL in Kubiak's system. Morency has it, Lundy may have it, but DD does NOT have it. If he were healthy, he probably would have been beaten out by Lundy and Morency anway.
I don't care that we passed over Bush. I don't care that we pased over Young. I'm annoyed that our in-the-box-only thinking painted us into a corner and ended up with Williams. The team said no one was looking to trade, but that's a cop-out. There's always a trade, if you find the right offer. No one offering us their draft board shouldn't have equaled no deal. Would you have gone nuts trying to trade up for last year's number 1 (Alex Smith)? You have to figure out value, and go from there. You can't tell me that no team wanted Bush at the top spot. The question was how much would he fetch. The Texans refused to entertain anything other than a blockbuster offer for a draft pick they didn't really want. I would have tried to sweeten the pot and grab the Jets' two first rounders. Mangold and Brick would have been perfect for us. Evan
Well, if we wanted MW...we would have had to take him at #1. There was a good chance NO would have taken him at #2 with the loss of Howard.
Based on Kubiak's system I still don't think he would have drafted Bush. You would be asking Bush to completely change the style of running he has always been accustom to. He is NOT a 1 cut and go running back. He needs to jump around and cut numerous times to find an opening. I'm surprised more people do not realize that he would have not been a fit here.
Not a chance in hell. I think Reggie Bush is going to be a really good running back, and perhaps an even better slot receiver and return man. But in today's NFL, great running backs are only, repeat only, important in fantasy drafts. It's not just Denver, look at Carolina. They keep plugging in backs and they all succeed. If Houston's line ever gets to that point, it won't matter who's taking the handoff. If it doesn't get to that point, it won't matter who's taking the handoff.
I disagree with this thought, which has seemingly becoming a popular notion around here, and I'll tell you why. If you watched Bush at Southern Cal you would have seen that he ran through holes in a "north-south" manner that the offensive line created in addition to being elusive and using his other worldly combination of speed, change of direction, and quickness when nothing was there. Durning the great USC v. Notre Dame game last season Bush gained the majority of his yards by running up the middle. Heck, early in the preseason some of the longer runs by Lundy (one in particular) would have likely been touchdowns if Bush was inserted in there. I might even go as far as to say that Bush would have likely benefited more from this system and this team, specifically, than any other team in the league. Can you imagine Reggie Bush capitalizing on Carr's inabilities? That would have been a sight to behold, let alone running in a proven system. A system of which has never seen anything like the talents of a Reggie Bush. Stop being a homer.
