I apologize for the derail and I asked thumbs this in the Iran election thread but I am honestly curious about the answer.

How does Obama intervening what is happening in Iran, rhetorically or otherwise, help out the Iranians?

it matches his rhetoric with american ideals and actions that demonstrate that america and he stand on the side of democracy. further, it puts pressure on the iranian regime and shows that america if watching, and will hold the regime accountable.

wouldn't you at least like to verify the problems with the election before you start popping off at the mouth?

....and vocal US support will be the best way to get them the upper hand in a domestic power struggle, and not have the opposite effect - you are certain of this?

basso when are you either going to get serious about gay rights, or stop pretending you are serious.

Look at your stance on Presidents positions on amending the U.S. constitution. Until you rectify that, it is impossible to take you serious on this issue. I can't think of any activist or leader in the field who would be able to reconcile your claim on the issue, and your claim to be a supporter of gay rights.

    He's already done that.

It doesn't surprise me that you didn't pay attention to the Cairo speech.

It doesn't surprise me that you didn't pay attention to this thread.

Given that the anti-american card has been a large part of Iranian politics in recent years - I am not certain but I at least have some evidence that would lend one to think this.

basso, the situation in Iran is clearly on a knife edge. No one knows how far this conflict in the streets of Tehran is going to go, and if it is spreading into other cities with the same passion as shown in the capitol. The current regime has, since its foundation, used America as their personal whipping boy for anything wrong with the country. We were the focus of their revolution, after the Shah. You know, all those hostages and such. If we get out front attacking the regime for this stolen election, then the theocracy and their front man, the "President," will waste no time blaming all demonstrations on provocateurs paid by the CIA. I'm sure they are already, but giving them ammunition with the situation so volatile would be foolish. No one is praising the regime for the "election." Right now, threats would be counterproductive. Video splashed across the government controlled media of the US President attacking the regime plays well for the regime. Got it?

Maybe we should see how this all plays out before criticizing an American President who's watching events as we are, just with more information.

    He knows this full well.

I don't think even the Bush Administration (at least officially) would be dumb enough to jump headlong into the fray in the way that the bassmaster is demanding - they learned an embarrassing lesson about that in 2002 regarding Chavez when they endorsed the unsuccesful coup and then ended up playing right into his hands and cementing his rule.

A state in the Frozen North next to your own, in a city often compared to Austin in the 1960's. I need to visit, because I remember Austin from the 1960's and it was pretty damn cool. Groovy is not too strong a word.

    Certainly, we agree here.

North Dakota State! Go Bison! ;)

I presume UW Madison. Madison is a fun town and very similar to Austin. I would recommend visiting in early October when the leaves are changing color along Lake Mendota.

My son is driving me crazy. He got numerous scholarship offers from excellent schools and had to go to a state university out of state that (gasp!) doesn't toss out aid to families with our kind of income from out of state (I know, that's a lot of "out of states"). Bummer! So we'll not only have to buy him hundreds of dollars worth of cold weather gear (he's clueless about the cold... the only snow he sees is on TV!), but shell out the full freight for 4 years. If he had gone to a Texas state university, all tuition and fees would have been covered by our Texas Tomorrow Fund thingy. It only pays part of out of state tuition (public or private).

Thanks for the advice. That's when we were thinking of going, depending on when my daughter can get out of school. Do yourself a favor... don't have kids as late as we did. Our friends have already done all this stuff. Heck, some of them have grandchildren. :(

What does Obama need to say that would be helpful here? I can't think of anything he would say as being anything but a tool to be used by A'jad as propaganda that the U.S. is behind the protests.

What does the U.S. have to gain by getting involved? Why don't you answer that question Basso?

Hold the regime accountable by doing what? We have NO DIPLOMATIC relations with the country. So you would propose that we tell Iran that hey, be more like America or else we will punish you by talking to them LESS????

We don't even have an embassy to register a complaint. All they will do is keep building nuclear missles.

And let me tell you something, the right wing conservatives want A'jad in power.

Keep in mind - you're talking to someone who thinks Bush style diplomacy is great and worked well. Just yell and scream and everything will work out.

And don't forget calling them a cool name like "axis of evil". That always helps.

I keep giving basso another chance at becoming "sane." It's a fault I have with the guy. I admit it.
