CFs, A friend has recently moved to Houston and is looking to volunteer at a no-kill dog shelter. Can you guys recommend any? He used to volunteer at (Austin Pets Alive) and is looking for something similar: somewhere to help walk/foster/just clean out the cages etc Location preference is inside 610, or S/SW/W Houston side. Really any location would be helpful. Thanks!
Friends For Life in the Heights. The only no-kill shelter, I believe. Sign up on their website, the volunteer coordinator will reach out with orientation dates/times, you go tour and learn about the organization and their long term plan to make Harris completely no-kill like Travis, you buy their volunteer t-shirt and then you come whenever you can! They always need people to walk dogs (and you can take 'em for as long as you want!) and REALLY need people to help socialize the cats (cause no one likes cats).
big ol houston and we only have one no kill shelter? if i win the powerball i will open the most baller no kill dog shelter of all timez
Thanks - yeah this is the one I ended up suggesting to him as the most similar model to Austin Pets Alive As well as Pals for Pooches This guy is pretty sincere about it so one of these will work out
I mean what choice does he city have? Before the last bond approval they were pressed for funding in one of the worse cities in terms of stray animals. Our climate makes for extended breeding seasons. I for one would recommend Barrio Dogs as well.
Ah, I didn't see the no-kill part in the OP, just read the thread title. I don't necessary condemn all no-kill shelters because from what I've seen at BARC, it really is their last resort. The number of animals they save FAR OUTWEIGH the ones they have to put down. It's terrible, but it's just how it is in this city... I just recommended BARC because their volunteer program is VERY well run.
Ah! Didn't take your first response seriously, but I'll let him know that the volunteer program is run well at BARC
My Mom did some volunteer work at a kill shelter. She couldn't do it like after the first day because she saw two older yellow labs in a cage. When she came back the next day, they were gone (as in had been put down). Now, she just gets upset and cries rehashing the story any time it comes up. I feel bad for her because it scarred her. I just wish she wouldn't have done it because I knew she wouldn't be able to handle it. Unfortunately, since she is bi-polar, she has to be kept on an even keel when it comes to her emotions. Any situations where she gets too excited or too upset can possibly trigger symptoms even if she is on her meds. It's very limiting. It's downright depressing.
St.Agnes Academy is an all girls high school located on Bellaire and has the stigma of having ugly girls.
