And I never understand more than 50% of what Allen Iverson has to say ... well, he's doing ok there ...
I think he was just being loyal to his fan base in China. As far as his English is concerned, I am sure he will be able to understand play calling better than Kelvin Cato.
Even if Ming is not fluent in English, he can learrn. English is an easy language to learn. I think they can afford to invest in a good English tutor for him.
That's the other factor I was thinking of for using an interpreter, in addition to not wanting to be misunderstood. Americans weren't the only ones watching the draft. Chinese were watching too, I imagine, and he probably owes it to them to speak the language they share. When asked what he wanted to say to the U.S., he spoke English, "Hi, Houston, I'm coming."
A lot of Asians learning the English language are embarassed of their English. He probably understands most of what is said to him, he just feels more comfortable at this time speaking Chinese. Are you sure Torres understands English? He sure took a lot of shots for a rookie last year when he played. I'm not sure that Rudy gave him the green light.
