The that to the people of Seabrook whose beaches and parks have been destroyed due to the Port expansion.

I see land being bulldozed left and right. Such much land in this area has been developed in the past 30 years. It's insane. I see all of the land in Galveston being developed for expensive homes. The world itself is not better off. We are in denial.

i sure as hell don't think that.

i don't think you can find many mainline Christian denominations, other than the Southern Baptists, who haven't said that we are in a crisis with global warming and pollution and that as stewards of the earth we're failing God and ourselves. Hell, even Ted Haggard came out and said that.

I think you misunderstand what Christian theology has to say about the relationship between heaven and earth.

Before we get all theological I'll add my two bits:

In terms of civil rights we're way ahead of 50 years ago.

Even in terms of the environment there's been huge improvement from the 70's. Many rivers and lakes that were basically dead have been reclaimed. The environment is 'on the agenda' even in developing nations.

Worse off, IMO are the issues Rhester brought up regarding family. And our obsession with materialism and consumerism is not showing a good trend. Possibly that's all interrelated. TURN OFF YOUR TV's PEOPLE. Go outside and meet your neigbours.

We're almost scared to bring up the improvements in fear they'll be interpreted to mean all's well. It isn't. There's still a long way to go. But the world's not as gloomy a place as some of y'all think.

There are a lot more people ya know. And yeah, not everything is hokie dokie.

But there are trends beyond our control. Human population growth, and people changing the world are massive dynamics. Just be conscious and aware is a good first step...you influence people by the example you set in life. That's a lot of impact. The people you touch in your life is a symbol of the impact you have. And I don't think anyone really knows who they touch or not. It's not just a kid you you teach something, or a friend...but even the point you might make in class, or 30 other things. If viral marketing has taught us anything, it's that we have far more power to shape things then we can see or realize.

100's of years ago, the world wasn't a peaceful haven. Children died of disease in droves. War was on a scale far beyond today. Soldiers raped and pillaged, and killed indiscriminately. There was no heritage sites, no endangered species list. Rarely did people even thing about the direction the world was heading. Most people were poor.

Maybe instead of worrying if the world is a better place or not...just wonder what you do to make the world a better place....for you and the people you touch in your life - your friends, your families, and the stranges you cross paths with.

How much does your view depend on politics?

During the Clinton administration, conservatives railed that the culture was going down the drain, that taxes were going to an all- time high, that we were too weak on foreign policy, etc.

Now liberals are saying that the environment is getting destroyed, the poor are getting left behing, the middle class is dying, and the world hates us because of our foreign policy.

Could that much change in 8 years?
