no question about it. i'm not suggesting we should be satisfied. but i'm thinking life for the average joe today is better than life for the average joe 1000 years ago.

yet, slavery has been virtually abolished, women have rights around the world that they've very rarely enjoyed throughout history and even the most autocratic regimes are sensitive to the concept of human rights, even if it's only to pay them lip service.

forgive me for this but, new york is a more profound cultural experiment/evolution than houston. i see normal joe getting the wrong end of the stick as the gap between the rich an poor is becoming THE ABYSS. i think i stand closer to it than you and i've looked in. i don't like what i see.

are you suggesting that the gap is wider than it was 1000 years ago?? the very concept of food stamps or any aid for the poor was a joke. to be poor in 19th century Ireland, for example, was to eat grass. we're not there. though i certainly understand that in select parts of the world people are starving. but did you ever read a Charles Dickens book?

i agree with you...where there's injustice you point it out...and there's a helluva lot of it. but i have a hard time looking at history and thinking that human beings treated each other better in the past than they do today. i think we've seen enough in the past 100 years in this country, alone, to back that up.

But the destruction of the natural world is increasing. So if you ask if the world is getting better, I have to say no.

I see a world united by the a website created for the love of a team that was spawned when Vernon Maxwell, Kenny Smith, Otis Thorpe, Hakeem, Rudy T, Herrera, Brooks, Bullard, Mario Elie, Sam Cassell and Robert Horry won Houston's first championship. Uniting the WORLD!

and currently, there are people screaming from the rooftops against it. ask pittsburgh how much better its environment is today than it was just 20 years ago. general wisdom is we need to do a far better job of securing and preserving nature. change has happened and more is on the way on that front.

i'm suggesting that the average joe, the middle class, you know, that thing that represents america, is going away. the establishment of a middle class has been essential and positive as regards progress, wealth and stability. why are we going backwards?

i'm suggesting the fact that you are aware of this and there are efforts to preserve a middle class...and to raise the level of people below it...is evidence to me that the world is a better place than it was.

i'm suggesting that if you give the american people equivocal universal healthcare and education i'll STFU and agree with you. oh, and i'm with meowgi about the environment. i'd like to be able to swim in the east river, that would be awesome.

derr, not equivocal, i meant equal access to.

i love it. sign me up.

i'd like to point out that most developed countries do have universal healthcare. i think that's evidence of my point! :)
