One problem could be that some of the rule changes put into place in the last several years have shifted the focus from a team-oriented game to a one-on-one type game.

    Just my opinion.

I think that possibility was dead the day after the all-star game.

There's a number of issues, many owing to the luxury tax which makes it more likely for teams to be unbalanced and tending towards the "let's throw in a bunch of role players around 1 or 2 superstars" rather than collecting a a bunch of All star players and keeping them on the same team (though the Suns & Pistons have done this to an extent) as the Lakers, Bulls, Pistons of the 80's were able to do.

    dudes,
do you guys not know anything about las Vegas and sports teams?
you realize you CANNOT BET on UNLV.

Also at the PALMS casino, you CANNOT bet on the KINGS since the owners (MALOOFS) own the Kings.

so if there is an NBA team in Vegas, you CANNOT bet on that team.

It's the SAFEST PLACE for an NBA Team and ref.

Actually they're surveying the land for the arena as we speak and it's supposed to be up and running by 2010.

I'm all for us getting a team here. It'll give me a chance to see the Rockets at least twice a year :D

WRONG!!! The ban on betting on Nevada college teams was lifted about 4 years ago.

    This is true.

I have no idea where you came up with this gem, but this is false. It's about ownership of the team. There have been other pro (albeit semi-pro) teams that have operated in LV and have allowed wagering.

But Stern has always been concerned due to the fact that gambling is everywhere in LV. And he said today that gambling of ANY kind is verboten.

And the big drawback to having an NBA team and not being allowed to bet on them goes back to the big arguement about not being to bet on UNLV in the past. It makes it look like there is something crooked going on. If everything is legit and on the square why would there be any need to not allow wagering on them? Especially if the NBA and the Nevada gaming commision are supposed to make sure that the integrity of the game is not comprimised in any way in the first place.

Where? Are you talking about the area near the train tracks by downtown?

I probably wouldn't mind either, but there is one BIG question to be answered. Who is going to PAY for this? No one ever brings this up. Now if most of the funding came from the casinos then I wouldn't have a problem with that. I would definetely be voting against any measure to have taxpayers pay for it.

    look,
the NBA + Vegas would be great. as long as Pacman Jones is not in town, it would be fun for everyone. NBA players are always in Vegas anyways.
    I've ran into so many.

I heard this on ESPN radio today, and I'm not sure if it is right, but it is eye-opening.

With the advent of internet gambling, only about 5% of sports gambling occurs in Las Vegas and that number is dropping.

Singling out Vegas for gambling issues is apparently overblown.

The offensive game has probably stayed about the same, but the defensive game has improved greatly. The Showtime Lakers would not look so showtime against today's athletes and defenses. This is why the modern game became less enjoyable to watch. It all started with the 94 Rockets/Knicks uglyball. At least the new rules have helped out the offenses, and made the game more watchable.

Maybe it's because my just truly love the game of basketball or because when I first came to the US and started watching basketball was during the "uglyball" of '94, but I love to watch the inside-out style. I was raised on the Dream and to me, nothing is better than throwing it down to the low-post (Hakeem), a spin here and the double comes, then the ball is moved back out to the top of the three-point line (the Jet) and it swings for the corner three (Elie). That is just freaking amazing basketball to me. Even the Van Gundy Rockets were exciting to me, while all my roommates couldn't understand why I watched every Rockets game instead of watching the Suns play. Bring back the big men!
