me, kwame, and libegez (something like that) have been dogging battier for a while now. the man is overrated! guys score 25+ on him every night and he doesnt do anything on the other end but stand in the corner. its not worth having him out there. that is an insult to chuck hayes , in my opinion chuck is one of the most underrated defenders in the league, and chuck isnt out there playing 30 minutes a night.
On court team offensive ratings: Yao Ming - 108.93 Tracy McGrady - 106.39 Ron Artest - 105.10 Shane Battier - 111.02 Battier is *the* glue guy on offense -- things just work efficiently when he's on the court, whether he's taking shots, making shots or not. Actually -- for a slight correction to my previous statement, Von Wafer has now surpassed him with a 111.61 rating. That said, 111.02 is outstanding (even compared to the rest of the league), and especially so for a team that has had the struggles the Rockets have had.
I don't hate anybody. I want what is best for the Houston Rockets. If you combine Rafer's lack of production offensively along with Shane's impotence on the offensive end it doesn't bode well for the Rockets against elite teams they'll be playing in the playoffs. Supporters of Battier will try or say anything to demonstrate that he benefits the team out there, but he doesn't. As leebigez has pointed in the Teflon Don thread, Battier gives the ball to Yao then stands at the 3 point line like a fan sitting courtside and just watches his man molest Yao. He doesn't cut to the basket for an easy layup or fill the lane thereby taking his man with him so that Yao can go one on one. Battier's man is not even worried about guarding him. Like I said in the Teflon Don thread, even if Battier has a below average level of production for his position by NBA standards the last 2 games, Rockets win both contests(this game would've been a blowout much earlier.) As far as Morey and company being "dimwits," tell me which team will give us a lottery pick for Battier.
take a stats class and learn what most stats really mean. tracy scored 26 pts v. the thunder before he took his 2 weeks off. he scored 24 pts v. philly. see which game he moves/plays better in. not the game where he scores more points. when i watch games, i can admit shane is a scrub on the offensive end.
Dear Dr. Huey Newton, I don't think they were ready for this revolutionary message, but as time has passed, the masses are started to come around.
Come on guys, are you kidding me? You mean you wouldn't prefer having the player Shane Battier has become with the Rockets over the player Rudy Gay has become with Memphis?
He's a scrub depending on what youre expecting out of him. If youre expecting him to score and beat people off the dribble, yeh he is a scrub. But if you're expecting him to knock down 3s , space the floor, make the smart passes, get offensive rebounds, he does all these things. His passing is really underrated. I think alot of people are ragging on him right now because his 3 point shot isnt going in, but over time, that will get corrected. He has proven that he is an above average three point shooter over the course of an 82 game season.
Chuck can play defence against certain players-Garnet Battier has lost all his ability to be effective.
At the risk of patronizing you, I have taken masters level statistics courses. You, on the other hand, are demonstrating a complete lack of understanding of the term "team offensive rating". You claim Battier is a scrub because he isn't filling up the bucket with points, and then to prove your point you tell me that McGrady was a scrub in the one game where he actually scored points efficiently despite lacking his normal athleticism. Did the terms "efficiency", "athleticism" and "scoring" all get tangled up somewhere in your mind? Perhaps you need to sort that out. Anyways ... back to the point. Shane Battier contributes to this team in ways most simple fans do not see, without having to score points. He keeps the ball moving, helps the team execute efficient, high percentage offensive possessions, spaces the floor effectively, and communicates with his teammates. There's a reason why his coaches and general managers fawn over him while fans sit on their sofas munching on doritos and whining after a blowout win because he didn't tickle the twine for their entertainment.
Nice...I agree...Spacing is key to the functioning of any offense. When you have a dominant center like Yao, spacing and execution is everything. Battier knows how to play with a post prescense. he did it very well in memphis when they had gasol, and he has done it very well since he's been here with Yao. Nothing has changed.
Not just that he isn't hitting it, he isn't even attempting it. What does he average? 5 shots a game at best?
i dont know....all i know is all of his shots are within the flow of the offense which is what you ask for.
I am a very SIMPLE fan, and i'm the first to acknowledge that, but I think you should answer Kwame's question...which team will give us a lottery pick for a guy that doesn't even bother to shoot?
You mean the guy that just played 35 minutes in a blowout victory? It's funny how fans with one breath criticize players who look for their own shot, and with the other breath criticize the one guy whose game is 100% about the team.
Thats what I mean. This is the curse of a jump shooter. When you make, youre doing what youre supposed to do, when you miss, youre worthless...The only thing that really matters though is his career shooting percentage and its around 40 percent. That is well above average. He will get back to that at some point this season.
Shane doesn't even have to attempt a shot to contribute to the team. That's the advantage instead of the disadvantage of him. He can just keep the offense working with his passes while letting yao or other offensive players to take the shot. Maybe you want to trade shane for another player that makes more attempts (stolen from yao). We'll see whether yao makes more of them or the new guy you want to get. Shane is the best guy of the team in finding yao. He just makes our team offense looks better. Yes, it's true even when he isn't even making one shot attempt.
