I still like The Simpsons including [GASP] the new seasons. I’m as big a MASH fan as there is...but yeah, the first season wasn’t very good. It’s my tendency to not like the first season of most of the shows I love. MASH, The Simpson’s, How I Met Your Mother, Parks and Rec, The Office...all got waaaaaaaaay better in season 2...once they worked out the character’s personalities. The only one of the shows I still watch regularly that I could say the 1st season wasn’t terrible is The West Wing...and that includes the fact that I hated Moira Kelley’s character on there.
Friends is a bit more timeless to me. Plus, it's easier to connect with a group of likable people rather than assholes (hence part of the reason I hate How I Met Your Mother). Seinfeld has a ton more one liners that people love.
For me it scores a lot more points because it isn't a multicamera comedy and has soooo many slow burn jokes. Multicamera comedies have a pacing to them. You know when 80% of the jokes are coming because they have to hit a certain number of jokes per minute with the laugh track.
I reference Seinfeld about 20x more than the next show (Simpson’s) which is far ahead anything else. Seinfeld humor was never too in the present and didn’t rely on the lowest grade plot (romance) to get it by. It also wasn’t prejudiced. Lots of minority representation. Friends relied on Ross/Rachel and Chandler/Monica, the Office was too much Jim/Pam and the plethora of other romances to get it by. Big Bang Theory was same. Julia Louis Dreyfus doesn’t get nearly enough credit for her acting on that show. She didn’t fall back on being the “pretty girl” but would consistently humiliate her own character. She literally made the show.
I don’t want it to hold up. I want only older generations to like it. Gen Z does not deserve classic TV shows.
I absolutely love Seinfeld, and I only actually watched the show over the last couple of years with my wife cause we got the full series on DVD to binge watch. My favorite 4th wall breaking subplot is how bad of an actor Jerry Seinfeld is compared to the rest of the cast (especially early on). He's actually a pretty terrible actor, but at times it makes him even funnier in scenes. Everyone else has excellent comedic timing. Love his jokes and distinctive delivery though.
