A core component of my ideology is to spend as little money as possible on impermanent depreciating assets.

I drive a beat-up 97 tacoma. I would continue to drive this vehicle for the rest of my damn life if I could.

    Yes.

(This has been another edition of obvious answers to stupid questions.)

'Luxury' cars, IMO, are status symbols. You pay for that brand. So unless you get that car for some kind of outrageous price, you're doing it for some reason other than A to B.

There are exceptions. Real Estate agents need to have nice rides to chauffeur people around. If you're hob-knobbing with investors, it pays to have something that says 'I can handle the money', even if you can't.

...but hey, at least you aren't driving a Hummer. That's a REAL douche-symbol.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to rhadamanthus again.

I don't get why there is such a stigma involved with BMWs or BMW drivers. It's not like they're super exclusively priced that only really rich people can afford them. I just bought a new 328i for under 30, which is a very reasonable price for any new car. I didn't buy the car to impress people. It was more the fact that you get 4 years/60000 miles with EVERYTHING covered and it was the best looking car I could get at the price. Plus, I know plenty of douches who drive other kinds of cars.

I can't stand this because it's true. I really like the 3 series hard top convertible, but now I can't get a bmw ever. Maybe when I'm rich I'll just say F-it and buy one anyway ... or some other manufacturer will make something I can obsess about.

    on the OP -

The douches just yell louder than everybody else. It's like being italian american and dealing with "The Jersey Shore."

Bmw's are nice cars but they were better 10-15 years ago. Now they're so common and your everyday average (douche) err Joe has one. I think they're played out. That's just me though.

    Hey, I resemble that remark!
But I only posted it like twice... in car threads that other people were posting pictures. Can't help it if you remembered mine :)

I agree with the approach, but the experience of driving a "performance" car can truly make some people happy. After all, the point of making money is to do/buy the things you want in life.

And what's the difference between a BMW driver and a porcupine? For the porcupine, the prick is on the outside.

    ;)

i don't get why so many people label others as douches simply by their lifestyle or fashion. if you don't act like a douche, i couldn't care less that you drive a masserati or wear your hat backwards or wear graphic tshirts.

Well, I've owned only Honda's in the past, and I'm at a point in my life that I want to shop for a nicer car for myself. Damn what others think.

Sorry if this offends people, but I don't want the 30K BMW, MB, Lexus, etc. I know it sounds very douche-ish (yes a word), but I believe you get what you pay for. 3 series, C-class, G, and IS seem to all be great cars. They were created for those that want a luxury car without a luxury price tag. Again, you get what you pay for. I figure if you are going to go luxury, go luxury. Spend the 50K+ for something really nice.

These base "entry-level" luxury cars are almost synonymous with the weekend millionaires or younger adults living outside their means. Obviously this is not always the case, but it sure seems true more often than not.

Leasing doesn't mean people are going for a car they can't afford. I've purchased all my cars so far, but I find that I'm always feenin' for a new one every few years. Might as well just lease for a year or two and move to the next car.

Yeah in the long run, costs way more money. But for those of us that want a new car every few years, it's a good fit if we are willing to accept the fact we'll always be paying for a car. No repair or maintenance costs (for the most part). BUT, right now I have no car note, and feels prettttty good, haha.

    I failed at the Internet.

I don't know, Car and Driver would disagree with you regarding the 3 series. It doesn't have to be full-out luxury; a combination of luxury, sportiness, and comfort is also a winning formula to many.

A masserati means you're a baller and far from being a douch. A 3 series BMW means that you want to look like a baller, but probably live in a apartment rental. Very douchy.

It's funny because I think it really depends on which BMW you own/drive where you're really portrayed as a douche. At least that's what I've seen/heard anyways.

Male driver driving a regular 3 series = douche
Male driver driving a 335i or an M3 = enthusiast

Automatically? No. But it does seem to lend a presumption of it...

But honestly, who gives a ****? If they're judging you simply based on the car you drive, that says more about who they are as opposed to who you are.
