i think defense CAN win you championships but the Offense is just as important u need it to keep u in the game games tied at 90 make a good defensive play and get the game winning layup in that case defense won u the game but if u struggle offensively during the game no way the defense alone will keep u in it or in a position to win it its gotta be a well balance of both D and O
I was saying that not all Nets' 108 points were "allowed" by Rockets defense for example. There were points from circus shots, lucky 3s, last second desperate throws, FTs given by Ref, points from Rockets' turnovers.... Conclusion: points scored not equal to points "allowed". Game is not decided by points "allowed" by defense. Game is decided by points you actually score no matter how you did it.
defense gives you a chance every night and probably a team leaning more defensively than offensively may have a better shot at winning a championship over a team that is more offensive than defensive. either way All-NBA 1st teamers give you the best shot at winning championships
^ Defense makes sure that games are usually in reach of winning or prevents opposing teams from winning. Teams can't win by relying on defense alone though, someone still has to score which is why scorers and stars are such a huge deal in the NBA. Defense allows for the scorers to win the game for you and as long as you can score enough to beat out the other team, that's all you need. Blow outs are nice and all, but a win is a win. A route doesn't count more nail biter at the end of the season. This being said, I can't remember the last time a non-defensive team ever winning the ring. Closest team to get there would probably be the Suns.
I think defense wins championships. Sure, offense is nice but teams cannot depend on being hot offensively day in and day out. If a team is committed to playing hard and give it their best on the defensive end, you will always have a chance to win, even if you have an off night offensively. Offense comes and goes but defense is always consistent if the team gives it their best effort.

defense wins championship!!! that is the truth. when you are talking about offense, ppl tends to talk about score. it's wrong. score has to be divided into two categories, either created by offense or by defense. remember nba has 24 sec restriction on each offense possession. it make both teams have equal offense opportunities if defense is not in the equation. so defense is one to make unbalance of scoring opportunities between two teams. i've never heard your own offense can take away offense opportunities other team has. you can argue a star can make offense easy. but when you say that, you actually put defense in the equation. majority of nba players can score easily if there is no defense. baltimore ravens are a typical example. they won and scored by their defense. it indicates if you have a superior defense which can shutdown any offense, you can win a title w/o offense. ravens had no offense the year they won the title. their offense did nothing but protect the ball w/o TOs. in a real world, it's tough to get a superior defense that can shutdown completely any team's offense. it's the reason you have to have a certain amount of offense to overcome the defense deficiency.
can you image you have a superior offense and no defense and you win a title? no. it's simple coz other team will score same points as you do since you have no defense. it is so obvious in nba due to 24 sec violation. so how can you win with a superior offense? the answer is you have to have a little bit defense IF you do have a superior offense that can crashes any defense. here you see the difference between a superior offense and a superior defense (i stated in my last reply).
You can't compare the 2 sports. Basketball have player who make a major impact on the game vs football the true team sport. Lebron can turn the rockets into contenders right now vs a lotto team. The same can't be said for 1 football player.
You need offense too. If it was all defense, then Mr. Intangibles Battier would be a franchise player with multiple rings and Kobe would be a ringless roleplayer.
you clearly didn't read through my posts and started to jump on your conclusion. can battier shutdown all five players from the opponent? can kobe win just by scoring and not playing defense? can he win if all other lakers' player standing around and doing nothing?
Mi answer is yes. http://www.nba.com/history/finals/champions.html Look the last decade, they are all elite defensive teams.
In 2008-09 NBA Finals, the Orlando Magic was playing that stingy Van Gundy defense, but were ranked 11th in offensive efficiecy. The Magic were ranked #1 in defensive efficiency, while the Lakers were ranked 5 spots lower. Guess who won? http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/LAL/2009.html http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/ORL/2009.html It proves that you need more than the best defense to win a ring. You also need offense.
For the people that think i mean Defense only wins answer this. What is more important to win championships, Defense or Offense?
impact is impact. no arguement on his capability. but why he did not win a title every single season? i am talking about defense win championships. please read through my posts and understand the logic why i said defense win championships.
They are also elite offensive teams. If it was only about defense, then the Cavaliers would have a few rings by now. Cavaliers are one of the best defensive teams in the league, but their offense was mediocre until last year.
clearly their defense iwas not superior. yes, they are #1 ranked but in the sense of relatively speaking. their defense displayed the holes lakers explored.
