Looking through this thread there are just as many world travelers who said there is no difference in service. *shrug*

I tip my barber because I want to. And I haven't given tips to taxis and not heard a complaint. Yes, they want a tip. But if you aren't happy you don't have to tip, and it's not on them, it's on you for feeling obligated/guilty.

You get a cheaper service because of it. Their tip is a legitimate part of their income as they get paid less because of tips. In fact, they make less than their counterparts in other countries because of it. So as much as you hate the system, you are actually paying less than if the system didn't exist.

The U.S. Department of Labor disagrees with you. Unless of course you believe that all service people should make minimum wage.

Interesting chart. So then you shouldn't have to tip in states like California or Washington those states do not allow waiters to get below minimum wage. wow, waiters get 9 bux an hour in Washington plus tips? thats a good gig.

They don't have to tip, thats the problem with the USA, a sense of entitlement to things that have not been earned.

What restaurant pays their server more than 2.23 an hour?

Ever been a waiter? Do you know how much **** you put up with on a daily basis? If you want good service you need an incentive. Tips are the incentive. If you don't have the potential tip, your service will suck.

I swear to God I have never given anyone poor service because of their skin color, but I can assure you that I know a lot of people who give minorities sub-par service for this very reason. Why bust your ass for 2 bucks? I'd be lying if I said I didn't get disappointed when minorities sat in my section, but I would give them the same service I gave anyone else because it's my job to.

If they get rid of tips your food is going to cost at least $5 more.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. US has abso****inglutely horrible service, and it's pretty evident every where I go from airports to restaurants or even my work place. Americans can be pretty lazy sometimes and when compared to other places like Hong Kong/Taiwan for example you can really tell the difference.

It's not that, it's more of a morality/self esteem booster.. It makes them feel good about themselves... Do you want high end places to become like this???

Poor kids? My buddy made over $500 over Mother's day weekend. Call me crazy, but that's good money.

Obviously dependent upon where you work, but servers can make good money.

Service in India is better. There are like 5 dudes waiting on one table (by committee)...your water is refilled after every sip

Oh and you don't have to tip if you don't want to.

So your argument in favor of some guy on the Internet, who thinks the rest of the world has ***** service, is that the other people on the same Internet forum, who have a different opinion, are not being honest? lulz

Meh, when I went to Chicago for a while, the service at restaurants seemed pretty much the same as the ones in England or back in HK. Most places here have a discretionary service charge though, so there really shouldn't be much of a difference between service here and in the US.

And precisely because of this and past tipping threads, I actually did leave some money lol, unfortunately I had no clue how much was enough.

I don't really feel pressured to tip however I am a good tipper when the service is of good quality. If not I adjust accordingly...20% is my standard for good service.

If tipping really bothers you that much then you are either a tightwad, have no empathy or you may not have the extra cash to dish out....only one of those excuses is valid.
