Does anyone think tipping should be phased out of society?

I have seen waiters chasing customers from other countries who does not pay tips into the parking lot, that was fun.

    You are half right.

They have to pay employees minimum wage, if their reported tips do not take them over it. And they have to pay payroll taxes on reported tips, and whatever they pay the employee.

The part you are right about is that they have incentive to not pay 7.65% on the tips that go unreported to them. Both parties win by dealing in cash tips, because they can illegally dodge taxes, and it is very difficult to catch them.

Doesn't that show how absurd the system is? A tip should be voluntary by definition. If it is not voluntary, might as well include it in the price, no?

I completely agree, but the way it stands right now, tips are part of their regular wage.

Then waiters should know that their wage is dependent on their performance and they aren't guaranteed ****. If they want a stable wage they should become a cook.

Tips were never 10%, you are just very cheap. The standard has been 15-20% for at least 20 years.

Because of my job I travel often and the service outside the USA is not as good.

Stop being an ass. What you just said does not contradict what he said.

The fact of the matter is, 20-30 years ago the standard was 10-15%. Now it's 15-20%. Since a percentage scales with whatever price the item is, why did it go up percentage-wise? Did restaurants start paying waiters a lower base wage so the tipping percentage have to come up to cover?

So you tell me it wasn't 10% in the 80's? So I am over the hill, sue me.

I'm pretty sure the base salary of $2.13 hasn't changed while minimum wage went up $2.10. Maybe that is why?

Ok, now that makes sense, but it just make the whole system seem even more stupid. We will be expected to pay 25% then 30% in a few years. Hell, might as well get rid of the $2.13 rule in the future because it won't even matter to the waiters at some point.

maybe the service is **** or maybe we as americans are just a bunch of impatient, entitled a-holes. when i was in southeast asia, the waitresses would take our order and bring out the first dish as soon as it was ready. this was customary, i got used it and liked it. they didn't wait for the cook to finish the entire order which only causes the first dishes to get cold like they do here.

So if you had a party of 2 or more then one would start eating before the rest? There go the manners. I wouldn't be surprised if some places here heated up the plates.

In many Asian cultures dishes are shared, so when you order four dishes for four people, you get to eat them all. Bring food one course at a time is a tradition too.

I agree. Tipping at least gives you some semblance of control over bad service. These guys aren't living lives of luxury here. They are trying to help you have a great experience and you show appreciation with a little extra.

Too often in many countries I get crummy service because they have no incentive other than their own personal disposition to treat customers well. If you want to know life without tipping might be like - visit France.

I am not trying to be an ass. As far as I remember it has always been 15-20%, and going back to the 70's I remember my parents dropping 15-20%.

If I am mistaken, I give an appology.

I do not get the tipping hatred. Generosity is very telling of a person, and I think it is nice to give 20-22% for good service and a good time.

I simply do not respect people that tip poorly, it tells me a lot about them.

This is all anecdotal. Plus, you have no idea if your poor service is because they don't do tipping or because of the general culture of the French.

I don't mean to lash out at specifically you, but apparently a lot of people in this thread have reading comprehension issues. It's been explained time again that just because some of us don't like the idea of tipping does not mean we do not tip. I tip, and tip well, but I think the entire concept is stupid.

You can be generous all you like. Feel free to tip at Starbucks. Feel free to tip at McDonald's. Heck, tip the guy handing you the grocery cart at Walmart. But just as that doesn't make any sense to me, tipping at a restaurant doesn't make sense. The way the system is set up I'll have to do it or the waiters get screwed. Doesn't mean it makes any sense.

One of the few times I agree with ATW. The tipping system is horrible.

Waiters, Barbers, Hotel Maids, Taxis, Limos etc etc - Please do not EXPECT a tip. This has become the cultural norm over here.

Tipping is and should be anything extra I feel the need to give.

It's not just France, it's many Euro countries. And don't even get me started about places across the world.

The U.S. has the best service...sure if you are in high end places in other parts of the world its great too...but I am talking about everyday restaurants.
