Does anyone think tipping should be phased out of society?

My issue is that servers feel they deserve a minimum 18% regardless of the service they provide.

My other issue is that everyone feels they are entitled to a tip. Coffee shops, fast food, Sonic, ect...

Servers should be paid minimum wage. Basically the restaurant can have twice the staff currently at the same price than if they paid min. wage. When business is slow, the restaurant can blame a slow day on why servers aren't making any money.

But honestly, I tend to get the same quality of service at lower scale restaurants than I do at mid scale restaurants on average.

All I am saying is that I couldn't care less about some poster's experience. I can't vouch for it and neither can you. Most people are a bunch of fibbers when they are trying to make their point.

Also it still does not mean much if people are telling the truth. All of our experiences are on a small scale, it is not sufficient enough to represent the real world. There is really not much validity to any post in this thread.

To the OP at the cheap Vietnamese restaurant the server will be able to take around 6 tables at a time, if not more, and the flip rate of tables is probably around 3x as fast as a steal restaurant. The server at the steak restaurant has 3 tables max.

When I worked at a Mexican place I would take around 15 tables all night and avg about $7 a table making around 100.

When I worked at a casual dining place I might only take 8 tables all night but I would avg $12 a tables coming to about the same amount of money.

And why exactly would a change in the tipping culture turn high end places into your videos? You rework the system and have the waiters be paid adequately. The tipping culture all around the world (specially Asia) is way different from the US. Take Hong Kong for example, the bill always has a flat rate of 10% tip added. Whether or not you want to give more is up to you. It's basically frictionless.

If they want the tipping culture right now to be the norm, why not just put in a flat rate of 18% so servers won't ever be unhappy with what they get, and people won't have to take the time to calculate their tip.

If its a flat rate on all bills, then it isn't a tip. That is about as silly as buying an item off the shelf with a "15% tip" that is used to pay for the wages of the worker who made it.

Tips are an earned incentive, not a set wage. The mindset with serving staff is that they feel entitled to 18% regardless of the service they provide. As the OP pointed out, why should I feel compelled to pay out a $3/25% tip for excellent service at a low end restaurant vs paying $20/15% at a higher end restaurant with mediocre service.

Why did the standard expectation go up from 10 to 15 to 18 %?

That has nothing to do with what I posted. Who the F told the restaurant industry to pay their people less than minimum wage to begin with. Seems like a ****ty arrangement to me.

Pay them minimum wage or whatever you feel is right for that industry, and if I feel their service was above par, I shall tip. Thats how it should be.

    It's absolutely a stupid phenomenon.

I know plenty of waiters and they all have an entitlement complex when it comes to tips. I've heard waiters say "If you don't tip at least 15% then it costs me money to wait on you."

Well why in the world would we create a system that does that? All it is designed to do is allow restaurants and waiters to avoid taxes. I've never heard of a waiter who fully reported their cash tips, if they report them at all. Sounds like a tax scam to me.

I tip well but I think it's a joke that I am expected to.

Anyway, worse than waiters is the new trend of every service place expecting tips. The food station in my building has a tip jar and if you use a credit card they ask you "should I close it out at ____ or would you like to leave a tip?" Why would I leave you a tip? Your cooking food and I'm getting it at a lunch counter. Such a joke. I also think it's silly that I'm supposed to leave a tip if I get a hair cut or take my dog to the groomer. If you did a good job cutting my hair then I got what I paid for. Doing a good job cutting my hair isn't above and beyond what I expected.

Also the Sunderbans. Be sure to tip the tigers after they eat one of your fellow tourists.

It goes back to that sense of entitlement again. Get by with the minimum amount of work needed to keep their job. If they happen to do a good job better tip them or they're 'not motivated' anymore.

Delhi is nice, very tourist friendly. At least near the major attractions.

And yea, I get excellent service in India, anywhere in the Middle East, never once have I had a waiter that felt he was entitled to get a tip.
