Does anyone STILL think we have NO CHANCE to make the playoffs?

That post was not directed towards you but, my reasons for saying that is our recent new found ability to kick it into another gear in the 4th and overcome deficits and adversity and close out and ultimately win ball games.

How many tough and tight ones did we win last year? Funny don't remember any. That's what I'm saying.

The Rockets are winning with offensive firepower and defensive stops. They're winning with T-Mac closing games (@ Minn, @ Sea), Yao closing
(GS), and LANDRY in the Indiana game! To become legit, they have to be more consistent though because this helter skelter thing with good teams won't fly!

They got to put it ALL together! :D

But, like I said, it's better to play poorly and STILL win than have the double whammy effect of physical and mental from losing bad games.

The good news is, they have some time to get it right! ;)

    I think I'm always objective! :)

Seriously, though. Will the Rocket's make the playoffs?

Given the data up and including the second loss the Philly, it looked pretty doubtful. We were 20-19 at that point and solidly out of the playoffs. Since then, we've gone 8-1, which is a very good run, but we've only made up one playoff spot so we're still out of the picture.

At times during the run, we've looked good; however, our wins have mostly not been very convincing for the most part. The games were usually very close in the 4th and we've had to get hot / lucky to pull them out. We simply cannot rely on being hot to close out games. But, hey, ugly wins are still wins.

Now were 28-20 and just a game back of the 8th seed. We'll probably need a record of 48-34 to make the playoffs so we need to go 20-14 for the rest of the season (or 59%). That's just a tiny bit better than our current rate (58%). So are the playoffs outside the realm of possibility? Of course not. Is it likely that we'll make the playoffs? Probably now (barring major injuries), it is more likely that we'll make the playoffs than not make the playoffs. If you believe the models from coolstandings.com or Hollinger, they forecast a 60% and 67% chance of making the postseason. (i.e. your expected return on the bet you made is probably around $5).

with the way we are playing now, we might make it to the playoff but there is no or only slight hope to get to the second round.

what's the point anyway just aiming to make the playoff

Until the trade deadline has passed, this discussion is rather pointless. Can the Rockets squeak in, yes. Can the Rockets advance far, with this current rotation, I'm not holding my breath.

FTR, I understand your POV from 3 to 4 weeks ago, that loss in Philly was just flat ugly and even yours truly was saying WTF!?! Thankfully since then Adelman did what JVG never would do, play rookies and play them for meaningful and significant minutes. And they have responded in a big way all three of them! Novak has shown promise when on the court but, he has issues on D so, that limits him to short bursts into the rotation.

The key is this month, the Rockets have to close to within one to two of the present division leader AT LEAST because, March especially the middle to end of March will potentially be a baptism by fire and we better be ready or we will get embarrassed and our playoff hopes will be dashed.

The key to continue to perpetuate our present success is for our bench to continue to contribute significantly filling the stat sheet, being aggressive, chasing down rebounds and loose balls.

Like I said, they have to get every possible W this month possible because, next month gets REAL interesting and not in a good way! ;)

The bench will have to do what you are saying but the starters have to play better defense, make their shots and free throws.

There's two separate issues: getting to the playoffs and actually making some noise in the playoffs.

One is definitely possible. The other is more problematic. Personally I don't feel like going out in the first round this year is a huge deal since it looks like it's going to take more than one season for the Rockets to get Adelman's system. Not sure how many other posters here feel the same way.

I think we will make the playoffs too.....I think the Rockets can be a great team when Yao is assertive....everyone else follows including T-Mac......When Yao is being taken out of his game like the past three games looking for a foul call and getting tore up on the defensive end, we barely won. I think Yao needs to handle himself better on the court and become more aggressive in playing smart. If the refs arent making the call I would have sent an inadvertent elbow at someone.....I bet they would call it closer then....T-Mac has been stellar these past three games and without him we would have lost all three games.....Yao needs to realize his role is to play smarter and become more assertive and the offense will run through him....these last couple of lackluster performances have been painful...

The current roster is a loser, with a capital L.

If you don't see it, you have homer glasses.

This is the most disappointing team since Hakeem lost a step. I have NO love for this team. They deserve to die sports death.

Well, thank you for your opinion. Sorry that life in all its splendor apparently sucks for you. But I do have good news, I just saved a boat LOAD on my car insurance by switching to Geico! :D

You're absolutely correct. Our players are so bad that we couldn't even give them away. I mean no team in the league would want Yao, right? Also, could you imagine any team better with TMac? Or Battier? Or Scola? Or Landry? Or Brooks?

You're right, it is hard to imagine a worse possible roster in the NBA.

To an extent, I agree with you. This team doesn't really have a personality. They appear lifeless, unmotivated, disinterested. They may not be, but they often appear that way. They don't inspire much of anything: love, hate, indifference. I am excited about the rookies, a glimmer of hope there, but I think the overall Yao/TMac experiment has failed. The rah, rah homerism just doesn't resonate when the team is so mediocre. They need an infusion of something. They are very unexciting. They definitely need a shooter/scorer. Definitely. If they don't get going, get a shooter, get something, they are going to get so blown out in the playoffs (if they make it). The West is loading up for the stretch run while the Rockets can't seem to get it together. Surely the GM and owner are as confused and concerned as the rest of us.

You mean to tell me that there are players on our roster that you actually like? ;)

I'm curious though. What did you think of the 3 pointer that TMAC took to win it vs. Minny? If any other player takes that shot it's not a good shot, even if the shooter is open.

Personally, I think those are the shots that superstars have to take and make on occasion. The game shouldn't have been close, but that's why they get paid..to finish games. They also appropriately get the blame when they take and miss them. The chron article today where TMAC talks about LeBron is pretty good in describing that.

In any case, I definitely see us making the playoffs. And I can see us still getting a home court seed, but things would have to really go our way for that to happen. I'm not sure how much good a home court seed would do for this team though.

As far as our winning %, if we take care of business this month, and do passably well in a much tougher March, we should be able to get into the 60%+ area and win 50 games.

You predicted that Rox would have a 41:41 season and have no chance to make the playoffs. You must be a genius and a great Rox fan. :D
