Loved it, grew up watching Paul Boesch and all the old timers already mentioned... BTW, I was named after one of the early wrestlers
You're actually a bit confused - the Rock & Roll Express used KISS songs (Rock and Roll all Night was the main one). However, a very similar tag team called both in style and gimmick "the Fantastics" used the ZZ Top Sharp Dressed Man thingy. Yeah i watched religiously....
awwwwwwwwwwwwww i loved the old school wrestling. too young to remember when they were actually in houston, but my dad and brother remember. I just remember when they were already wwf. those characters were hilarious. so damn cheezy but gotta love it!
My dad took my brother, a few friends and me to a live match for my brother's 10th birthday in 1965. That day's match featured lady wrestlers. We inched forward to get a better look and one of them "kicked wildly" at us which seemed so real..... we just wanted to believe.
Hell yes I remember all those guys. Watched EVERY Sunday religiously. -The Fantastics coming out to "Sharp Dressed Man" -Ted Dibease -Dr. Death Steve Williams -The Fabulous Freebirds with Buddy Roberts, Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy, and Michael "Purely Sexy" Hayes in his sequined rebel flag robe/cape-thing. -Kamala -Terry Taylor (I think that was his name....he was always the Television Champion) -Buncha different Russians....I get them mixed up from federation to federation. Damn commies.... -And Sting and some other guy I think named 'Rock' (not THE Rock....just Rock) wrestled as The Bladerunners. Back when I was 12, I saw Dibease wrestle Rick Steiner, Terry Taylor fought the One Man Gang, The Missing Link and some chick wrestled another guy and girl in a tag team match, The Fantastics beat some people up....looking at an old photo album, I'm pretty sure one of the guys was a bleach-blonde Sting, and in the main event, Dr. Death wrestled Buddy Roberts in a Steel Cage Match (which was actually a chain-link fence match, but whatever) all in the old SHC. It was awesome.
I remember going to what was probably one of the last events in the Sam Houston Coliseum. I think it was actually the night Paul Boesch announced his retirement after only 4 months of working with the WWF/Vince McMahon.
I met the Fantastics at a signing in the mall one time. Don't remember which mall; probably Memorial City or Town & Country.
I loved Houston Wrestling back in the day. Was one of the few events we went downtown to. My grandpa use to take me all the time.
Crap, talk about digging up an old thread. I used to live and breathe Houston Wrestling back in the day. I probably go back further than most in this thread, though, except for giddyup. I'm 39 and used to watch it when I first came to the country as a 4 year old. But most of my earliest memories are from the era of Bruiser Brody, Ox Baker, Gino Hernandez, Tony Atlas, Abdullah the Butcher (who runs a bbq restaurant, the last I heard), etc. I remember my mom hated watching wrestling, but she loved The Rock's dad, Rocky Johnson - and he was one of my favorites, too. I still remember the scene when Tony Atlas made his first appearance on Houston Wrestling and pissed Superstar Billy Graham off when he showed off his physique.
This thread has brought back some great memories. I think I prefer old school wrestling because it was so cheesy and budget. I like that I am in better shape than a lot of the wrestlers back then. This pyro/steroid/soap opera era we've been in since the 90's leaves me cold. Maybe it's best when you are 12 years old.
Anyone remember Pepper Martin? 39.... I cudda babysat you! Wait 'til glynch or deckard show their faces...
One of the most badass villains was Lord Humongous, the dude with the hockey mask. He had the nastiest sleeper hold move, which works great irl btw.
The original Lord Humongous : http://www.gotigersgo.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/stark_mike00.html Apparently there were several. I remember one that just looked like a big slob. His muscles weren't very well-defined.
