I've recently been watching some investigative journalism stuff on the Q anon movement and came across this six part documentary series on HBO Max.

I think the entire movement is super crazy and I don't give it any credence at all but I think the sociology behind the movement and all that is super interesting. Thought I'd see if anyone was interested in talking about it here.

Anyone else watch this or something similar? Any experiences with family/friends and Qanon?

I suppose this might be better for the D&D? I'm happy to see it moved if that's the case.

If I wasn’t disgusted and ashamed by these apeshit cultists it’s exactly the sort of show I would enjoy.

Felt the same, if it didn't have the kind of terrible real world repercussions it would have been more enjoyable....

The strength of their conviction and the number of adherents is pretty mind blowing. It's like, you just believe this crazy stuff because someone told it to you in a Youtube video or message board post? Wild.

I felt the same way watching "Crime of the Century" on HBO about Purdue Pharma and the opioid epidemic.

This isn't some random sex cult in Portland I can laugh about.

At it's core, the TRUE BELIEVERS are clearly fringe, sure...

    BUT.

Components and ideas of this "movement" absolutely do somehow bleed into the mainstream. And unlike a random cult in Waco or Portland or whatever... this cult actually affects me. It affects all of us.

So the idea of watching something like his hardly excites me. I imagine it would only bring me grief.

I like to RELAX. Give me more MARVEL MOVIES. Lulz.

I watched the first episode It is almost all Asian and black people. It’s somewhat surprising.

I figured more often it would be a collection of at least a few characteristics. White, overweight, unattractive, rarely reads a book, lower income, mullets, not politically compartmentalized within the right wing.

    I was 100% wrong though.

There's irony that some of these people distrust things like the government, vaccine, or democrats, but so willingly believe some of the most outlandish theories like pizza-gate, which as the series pointed out, that restaurant didn't even have a basement.

It’s amazing how similar the 8Chan people are to the Tiger King people.

It was a solid documentary and helped me understand the whole Qanon thing. That being said, I think it is also solid proof that the internet should be regulated as a significant part of the population is incapable of using it responsibly on their own.

20 more years and most the boomers will be gone. Although I’m also sad that people around my age also don’t understand the internet either.

The internet is like an encyclopedia. All media should be available. What should be regulated are the social media apps that use user data to essentially brainwash it's uses by feeding them whatever garbage gets them ad clicks.

Watch the doc called The Social Dilemma.

Never expect anything to Die out . . .with a generation or something
they are always replaced by more

I saw a facebook friend post about how their mom was a nurse for 25+ years
but now is anti-vaccines, does not believe in Covid and a variety of medical things she did for 25 yrs
They felt their parent was radicalized by Fox News, etc etc
in to going against things they know to be true

I thought it was interesting that the guy who was likely to be Q made his fortune by creating p*rn sites based on fake pedophilia - the same thing Q is supposed to be uncovering

Also did anyone notice during the march to the Capital possible "Q" guy looks straight at the interviewer and says "Can you believe this all started as a LARP?" - that right there is pretty much a confession that he started the whole "Q" persona
