I can't imagine that any medication that would cause such serious weight gain would ever be approved.

I think the average American eats about 3,000 calories a day so we're talking about more than 10 times the amount of calories. I got a really hard time seeing how you could eat that much. Even if you were eating nothing but the 1,000 + cal. Quizno burger, washing it down with a 1,000 + cal. Starbucks frappucino and a dozen donuts (2,400 cal) 3 times a day you're still only at 13,200 + calories.

I can understand people can be obese for a variety of reasons and we shouldn't judge but at 33,000 calories a day something is seriously wrong.

At the minimum if they can't stop eating start giving these guys diet soda and whole grain high fiber carbohydrates. At that point they will at least not be adding more calories and expending some digesting that but the onlything that might save them is drastic surgery.

Actually, Zyprexa, which is the the number one drug approved for schizophrenia and other uses such as bipolar disorder, is routinely attributed to people gaining weight anywhere between 20-40 lbs or more.

I have studied this medicine quite a bit for my work related purposes, and it isnt the actual Zyprexa which causes the body to gain weight, but it makes people hungrier than ever. So this on top of ppl who already are having some mental problems will find themselves in a big jam regarding their weight. It is hard enough to tell a "normal" person to go exercise, and it is doubly hard for someone who is having mental problems to go exercise.

Thus alot of ppl who take this medication develop diabetes due to their increased weight gain.

Thats why you might have noticed that lawyer's post all over the internet and billboards looking for clients who have been hurt by Zyprexa.

I only caught the last part of the show, but there were some interesting stats that stuck out.

Apparently, in people this obese, fat cells actually multiply and expand. The typical amount of fat cells in most people is 40 billion, but super obese people have up to 100 billion. The kicker is that fat cells don't go away, so they are stuck with the extra cells, making it harder to lose weight. Liposuction?

The British guy ate around 25,000 calories of candy a day. He also spends about $15,000 (USD) on candy bars a year. He took out a mortgage on his home to redecorate the interior and ended up spending half of the money on food. He talked about a euphoric rush he would get when he ate and said it was better than sex.

The American woman (the shorter haired one was British) had her 19 year old son go to the store and fast food joints for her. What's up, Gilbert Grape! He was a normal looking kid. I doubt he brings his dates home to meet mama.

The bulk ;) of the caloric intake for both of these people seemed to be sweets. If they could just cut out sugar, they would get down to a semi (ha!)managable weight. I remember when I switched to diet soda from coke. I lost 15 lbs in a month.

hmmm..33 ultimate cheeseburgers in one day? Noooo problem. I could see it happening if most of it was liquid say like sodas but even then. 33k a day!!! maybe the show was about the ones involved and how they eat a total of 33K calories a day amongst all of them.

Yes, it is kind of low. But you have to factor in that alot of my food throughout the day is of the liquid kind. Such as protein shakes. I also drink about 1.5 gallons of water at minimum. I've cut out all sugar and I don't even eat meat.

I'm 5 foot 9, and weigh 164 lbs. At my 8% body fat, I'm nearly at an all time high in weightlifting. I routinely bench around 260lbs without a spot even. My max is near 350, but thats mostly when I can trick my mind into thinking I can do it.

Cutting bad food from your diet is hard, I agree. But you have to start slow. For example about a year and a half ago, I would drink about two regular cola's a day. Then I cut to one, and then I slowly moved to 100% fruit juices. After realizing that fruit juice has still alot of sugar, I cut it down to maybe 1-2 cups a day. I drink the fruit juice in a protein shake combination.

I also eat nearly 8 oranges and 4-5 servings of vegetables.

My main vice now is breads. I really enjoy the walnut bread they sell at HEB, even though its a white bread blend.

But getting back to the original subject, many people associate eating foods as something that gives them joy. I think it is a big mistake to attribute positive emotions when eating or thinking about eating.

People will say isn't life boring without eating the fatty foods which are indeed tasty. I would say no. Food is not the main source of contentment in my life. I get joy from other things like personal growth. I think someone mentioned something similar to this a few months ago in another food thread.

That being said, I do enjoy one cheat meal per week. Its usually low fat cheese pizza. But constantly trying to please yourself with artificial substances like food is only a temporary fix. Sort of like drugs or liquor.

I'm curious at that weight and with that sort of diet how do you generate enough power to lift that much weight? If you're not eating meat then are you eating a lot of dairy and/or soy and taking supplements to get enough protein to maintain that muscle?

    That's 1400 calories per day.

    - Even a small orange has about 50 calories. You just used up 400 calories.
    - What is the typical serving for your protein shakes?
    - Are you getting enough fiber.
    - What's your protein to carb ratio? It sounds like you eat very little fat.

I'm certainly not knocking you, by no means. 1400 calories is still low, for how active you are, but it's working for ya.

Good Lord, 33,00 calories in a day? I can barely eat 1500, let alone 2000, so how is it possible to eat 33,000? That's just crazy.

Ok, so if a 700 lb person is on one of these meds and lets say it made them gain 100 lbs we're still talking about someone who was 600 lbs before taking the meds. So you can't really blame the medication for someone being 700+ lbs.

He said he drinks protein shakes.

Since everybody is saying his caloric intake is low, what should a person's caloric intake be if they are on a moderate to heavy exercise regiment? What should it be if they are just lazy and sit around all day? What should it be if they are trying to lose weight?

I learned in a biology class that if the average person were to just wake up and sit around all day they would still burn 1000 calories a day through normal body functions such as maintaining body temperature, breathing, heartbeat, etc.

Scratch the last question in that first section, the only way you can lose weight is by burning more calories than you consume.

1400 isn't too bad. I believe I was in about the same range when I lost my 70 something pounds.

Basically if you reduce sugars, carbs and substances like condiments and sauces such as mayo, mustard, ketchup and regular sodas you can cut out a lot of calories right there by itself.

Notice I said reduce and not eliminate.

right now I'm intaking about 1800 calories a day for maintenance and minimal fat loss

Actually, regular mustard is often advised as a substitute for other toppings such as mayo and ketchup because it has little to no caloric value.

Yeah. I remember my friend was dieting once and ordered a sub at Subway. She put honey mustard on her sub and I told her she should have went with regular. She then stated that it is just mustard with honey and that it was still pretty healthy. I told her that most, if not all, honey mustards are sweetened with very little honey and mostly corn syrup which is the same thing used to sweeten sodas and juices among other things.

It's still a healthier choice over mayo which is about 110 calories per tblspoon and is basically 80% fat.

True. All mayo is is eggs and oil with some flavoring ingredients.

It must be pretty expensive to keep up this habit. We're talking about lots of food here. The probably spend the same amount in a week that I spend in a month. And it doesn't look like these people work. So how is this happening?
