From a medical perspective the knee was/is healed because the doctors did their job correctly with the surgery.

That's a different issue from whether or not Tracy rehabbed the knee or if he took anything seriously over the summer. Common sense says if you want the best chance for recovery you don't let yourself get fat over the summer.

    no...

can't you see, the fault is all on the doctor now. it was never mcgrady's fault, some say.

but what do i know. let's move on...

The microfracture is being done because the guy is unwilling to play through a condition that other players play through. The knee looks the same as it has since the surgery. Even the newest, fancy MRI didn't find anything new. The procedure was chosen by McGrady because he cannot play through the pain. The only mistake the doctors made was overestimating this guy's mental toughness.

Can you show me where Tmac said he didn't do his rehab properly? I am not denying this is true, I just don't remember reading this factoid. Thanks

Only Tmac knows how much pain he was in. As a doctor, you don't dismiss a patient's pain because you think he should be more mentally tough. You are making a false assumption that he should have played through the pain.

i don't know why some fans couldn't get it.

Here is the quote from Jonathan in his blog:

No, the MRIs now show the same missing cartilage as the MRIs since last May. Pain is a symptom. Missing cartilage and joint surface are conditions that damage cause symptoms. -- Jonathan

only things doctors didn't expect were tmac can't bear the pain and his personal interests.

playing through pain to strengthen his knee and strengthening his knee before playing show what doctor believed. his knee doesn't neccessarily need microfrature surgery and his pain can be relieved after his knee becomes stronger by either rehab or playing.

so why did he chose the microfractuer surgery? it'a about timing. he has to gamble the surgery to regain his star status. otherwise, he has no chance to land any mega deal in 2010 summer coz he knew he couldn't bear the pain and he knew his performance by far in this season wouldn't have any chance to land a deal in 2010. if he don't do the surgery right now, he will have no chance to recover before 2010. i am not blaming him on this coz bball is business and he has to take care of himself.

from the team point of the view, it's better to do conservative ways to get something back from 20+ mil/per year. if he played through the pain and got his strength back, he would have a chance to contribute in this playoff and next year so his value would not look bad considering his skills (if he contributed in playoff) and his expirating contract. if rox forced him to do microfracture surgery, it could very likely end his career so only his contract will be available for trade during next this summer or next season before the trade deadline.

    true.

but, many pro athletes have done that, and successfully. so it's not out of reasonable expectations. and we are not talking about ordinary patients like you and me here.

if b. roy or kobe could be playing with almost no effect after an essentially same surgery in a few months, i can't imagine why mcgrady can't. unless of course someone can make a case that his body is so so different from all others'.

I honestly think there is blame to go around for it.

The fact is McGrady, Battier and Alston all had surgeries around the same time and only Alston really contributed. I honestly think maybe if they would have cut McGrady's minutes earlier in the season, he still might be viable to at least come off the bench, but overall it doesn't matter and I hope all parties involved learned from their mistakes.

Interesting... "I've told Tracy that I will take the blame".

Sounds fabricated. I'm not a TMAC hater, but have to agree with DD and the others on this one, sounds like the beginning of the PR campaign to repair the damage done, whether the public opinion is justified or not.

Amare didn't have surgery again, he went back to rehabbing only to keep working on his knee's strength. Tmac was told he needed to strengthen his knee.

the problem wasn't tmac couldn't play on it, but that the knee wasn't as strong as it should have been when he was cleared to play. Then as he played with it, it didn't improve strength wise since he wasn't concentrating solely on the knee, but rather playing, using nothing more than his own body weight and jumping of both knees or his healthy knee, so the weak knee wasn't being strengthened progressively.

I dont understand why people don't understand the problem wasn't he couldn't play. Physically he could and did play. What hurt him in the long run wasn't playing, but that the knee wasn't rehabbed all the way before playing. the dcotors said he the knee would keep getting stronger as he played, in theory that's correct, but only when the player is mentally at peace, Tmac wansn't, he was favoring the knee, limping on it, so how could he strengthen the knee by playing when he was favoring it?? If he goes up for a rebound, and is using mostly his healthy leg, or only jumping off the healthy leg, then the weak leg isn't getting worked out, so it's never going to get stronger.

The doctor feels its his fault for not realizing this and instead keeping Tmac in a controlled rehab environment before letting him play on his own, but physically Tmac COULD play.

i don't believe playing a couple games will get his knee stronger. it must be a long term deal. doctors believed if he kept playing, his knee eventually become stronger and less painful.

He said he was about 80%, and that he'd expect to be 90% 1 month in and 100% two months in, i'm not sure who's timetable this was, but if it's tmac's then that may be where he rushed to play

someone here said their sister, i believe, worked at the place where shane and tmac were rehabbing and said Tmac wasn't focusing......i know this isn't a credible source really, but it's more than simply assuming.....and well there's always tmac's apology on his website where he says he promises to give it his all when rehabbing this time, sounds like he himself thought he didn't give it 100% this last time. I wouldn't say he completely goofed through it, but i think it's safe to say he didn't take it as seriously as he could have. This goes back to what Ron said about Tmac thinking his natural talent can just carry him and doesn't always put in hard work.

I dont know what he did or didn't do during the summer, but just to look at both sides of this, since he was coming back from surgery he wouldn't be able to run or walk for a while, so it's only likely that he'd gain weight during that time, yes he was heavier when he came into camp, but "fat" is a stretch.

Teams can WAIVE the physical, or the results, either way if the team really wants to take back a damaged Tmac they could make it happen.

There's all kinds of rumors that doctor was just plain incompetent and messed up, at least this way the doc can clear up he didnt mess up the surgery or something that can affect his practice. The team ends drama and basically lets the fans know both sides are at peace with each other.
