Dobbins launched upward into Cutler's bottom helmet area. According to Rotoworld, he's on a 1 year 700k contract.
they were just both there at the wrong time. =) Sucks for us that cutler had to leave the game. we could have ended up with 4 ints. I do understand the fine, since you don't want to look like you're turning the other cheek when it comes to the issue of concussions. That's not on the commissar; it's on those that played the game in the past eras who are going after the league.
He committed to hitting a guy that didn't even have the football. I'm not mad at him, he took an opportunity to ring up Cutler, but he earned that fine. Had that happened to Schaub, the BBS would have been in an uproar just like we were after the Denver game.
LOL...Dobbins has a uncanny sense of where he stands on the field if he was aware that Cutler passed the LOS during the play
I always wonder why players don't look down to see if a player is okay after a hit. I mean, it would just look better for the player laying the hit. I wonder if the NFL would have fined him less if after the hit Dobbins bent over acting like he was checking if Cutler was okay. I know if I was a player I would do it in hopes it would save me some $$ in fines
It looks like Dobbins lowered his head into Cutler's chin. At the very least, it was helmet to helmet contact. 100% clean hits don't usually cause concussions. Kind of reminds me of Rod Woodson's hit on Warren Moon many years ago. Can't find a pic or video of it.
i think it's ridiculous. Cutler is out of the pocket, the ref "confirmed" he passed the LOS which effectively makes him a runner. if you're a runner you're not allowed to throw a forward pass. it's unfortunate Cutler got concussed but Dobbins didn't break any rules.
Meh. I know $30,000 is a lot of money, but as long as he isn't suspended, I'm ok with it. The fact that it was borderline means that you knew Roger was going to side with the QB on this one for the sake of PR.
It's not uncanny, it's common sense for a football player. Players generally know where the line of scrimmage is. It's especially easy when the LOS is midfield, given the enormous logo in the middle.
Wouldn't be surprised if some vets on the team chip in and pay for it themselves. I doubt Dobbins will be impacted much.
Here's the Mays on Schaub hit. Note that at the point of contact, Mays is almost horizontal. Leads with the head, clearly using helmet as weapon, which initially makes contact with Matt's head. Here's the Dobbins on Cutler hit. Dobbins is almost completely vertical and the initial contact is made shoulder to throat. Different scenario, and no, I wouldn't be complaining if the Cutler hit happened to Matt.
BS to me Dobbins was pretty upright when he made the tackle which is why their helmets his, they are about the same height Cutler was also a runner, it would have been a no call on any other position player
If Dobbins thought/knew Cutler was a runner before committing to hit him, why did Dobbins turn around and look to where the illegal pass (that Dobbins already thought/knew was illegal) ended up and then follow the chase to the ball? Shouldn't he have started pointing at the LOS to the refs after the hit?
Uh, because officials screw up ALL THE TIME. It doesn't matter if it's the most obvious penalty in the world and you see a flag thrown - you keep playing until there's a whistle. Take nothing for granted. That's just common sense.
Dobbins hit him WAY late. He had a chance to stop. I don't know about 50,000, but it was an illegal hit, whether it is past the line of scrimmage or behind the line of scrimmage, you cannot hit the QB like that after he has released the ball. There was plenty of time.
I'm okay with the fine, just glad it wasn't also a suspension. IIRC wasn't Joe Mays more suspended because he had a previous fine on a hit to Matt Ryan's head this season?
By this logic, if a quarterback is 5 yards past the line of scrimmage (while running) and sees a defender coming at him, he should consider releasing the ball and intentionally committing an illegal forward pass. Obviously the penalties would offset, as they did Sunday, but there are some cases where that could be beneficial for the offense (say, if it's 4th down and QB knows he'll be short). If it doesn't matter that he's past the line of scrimmage - i.e. the QB can always "go back" to being a thrower, no matter how illegal - you're opening a pretty big can of worms.
Cutler decided to pass and run towards the LOS. He was doing this very effectively in the first quarter. Basically let the pocket collapse and run up the soft middle. I don't blame Dobbins for thinking Cutler was going to run. Glad he wasn't suspended.
