Good kid or not, no high schooler should be offered that kind of money until they prove themselves against real competition. This type of hyping is hurting the NBA because kids get hyped so much they skip college and then go to the NBA and flop. How many straight from high school players really make it in the NBA? How many should have stayed in college a few more years or even gone to college (Eddie Griffin)? If anything, this kind of hype and throwing money at youngsters is hurting the NBA in the long-run. How many LeBron wannabes are gonna arise because of this huge contract? And how many of those young "potentials" will actually make the NBA a better league?

I want to see him fail so this sort of thing doesnt happen again for a long time. I think Nike deserves to lose major money on this kid if he doesnt pan out like he's hyped up to.

What's funny is that 99% of the people on here saying that LeBron should go to school, would jump to the NBA, sign a 10-year deal with Nike, etc. in a heartbeat.

Again, jealousy seems to rear its ugly head.

I understand that. I just think it's sad that people use this logic to "hate" on an 18-year old kid who is living the American Dream.

I don't think you really understand the point that I was making (which I believe was the same as the other doubters).

I even said in my thread that LeBron absolutely should have done what he has, taking the money, and skipping college. The reason we want to see him fail is to stop this stuff perpetuating. I genuinely believe it is to the detriment of the league to be paying young players on potential. It means that the product (the games being transmitted) is of a lower standard.

No one is hating on LeBron. I'm not jealous, and I don't want him personally to fail. I would just rather that the subjects of hype like this don't come off, so the league comes to term with it's declining appeal.

See the quote in my ealier post. I said people wanted to see James fail not because they hated the kid but because they hated the system. They wanted the SYSTEM to fail. But the failure of the system at this instance has to tie in with the failure of the kid. Besides, whether he will pan out in the NBA or not, he already has the money in his pocket. So why do you act like he's a victim of hatred that needs to be defended?

Few people are directing their objections against the kid. So stop the "hate" and "jeaslousy" argument.

For me, it all depends on where he ends up...

If he ends up in the East, I don't give a damn.

If he ends up in the West, you're damn right I hope he fails.

All I ask is that LeBron smoke the Bulls every year like Jordan used to smoke the Cavs.

All right. Personally, I haven't read this thread, nor do I care. I've come to say only one thing:

I hope and pray LeBron is a bust, because he signed with Upper Deck.

From ESPN: Competitor Topps, whose basketball business isn't as strong as Upper Deck's, put up a fight to land James during the three-week bidding process, but in the end Goodwin said James' family was most comfortable with Upper Deck.

We offered him a good deal. Upper Deck just gave him more (and the moon, might I add...). b*stard! Could've helped me get bonus next year...

I hope he succeeds in the nba, but unless he comes along and avg a triple double like Oscar Robertson, he'll never live up to the billing. The media has built up Lebron as a guy who will change the game, which he won't. Kobe,McGrady,Garnett, or even Shaq hasn't changed the game. In the history of basketball, its only been a couple of players who have done so and that was Wilt,Kareem,Dr.J,Magic and Bird. Physically and athletically, I don't know how else he can change the landscape of pro hoops. I just hope he has a very good hall of fame type of career, but unless the guy scores 30pts grabs 11 rebs and dishes 11 asst and wins multiple rings, i don't know if the media will ever look back and say he reached his potential.

I totally want him to fall flat on his butt and fail miserably. If that makes me evil, then so be it.

Yeah, if you don't like someone, then you hope he fails. There's nothing unusual or evil about it.

People hate Kobe for his demeanor, they savor every moment when he fails, yet some of them are now coming out to defend LeBron. You think Kobe is arrogant? Look at King James.

Anybody who is hyped this much is going to have haters.

Yao wasn't exactly hyped - there were a ton of doubters, so it was cool to see him succeed.

It's like the same feeling would be there to see LeBron flame out.

Now that he's going to the East, though, I'm not hatin' as much. :D It'll be cool having an Eastern Conference team to compete in a couple of years, if LeBron pans out.

I do think it'll be interesting to see how Darko does, though. THAT could become the ROY storyline next year, especially if he goes to Detroit.

And VecseySux, you're not evil; you have a perfectly good reason to hate LeBron. ;)

i think lebron will have a good season.. the only thing is, he hasnt got many good players who can teach him the ropes in the NBA and that might hurt his development. not like yao, he got the likes of franchise, cat, rice, rudy, hakeem(as far as i know), and m. malone(same as hakeem's). but i stil think he gon be good this season.

In all fairness LeBron carried himself VERY well during the Nets/Pistons halftime interview. He didn't look like the arrogant SOB that I thought he was. Don't get me wrong, anyone who calls himself King and speaks about himself in the 3rd person is an arrogant SOB, but maybe he isn't quite that bad.

That said, I still want to see him not outright fail, but not live up to the hype, because God knows there's no way he can ever live up to the hype thats been put on him by the media....

It'll all play out by itself...I doubt he'll even surpass Kobe in popularity and success...

There are people who have that sentiment mixed in with the way James has carried himself publicly so far.

The system will not fail or change. The box has been opened. How many teams have kicked themselves for not drafting Amare before Phoenix? How many teams have remembered that over the project that is Kwame Brown?

Every year is different and every kid will not be a bust. The gambling addicts who run teams will always look to the potential reward rather than playing conservative.

As for people who have a problem with the endorsement contracts, how does that affect us personally if these companies reward people on potential and not merit? Do we get robbed in principle or is a bit of jealousy in there?
