Generally you emphasize important words. But you'll find that in English you don't need worry about tone as much.

Street Fighter is my favorite video game series of all time. [/irrelevant comment] On a different note, does anyone know of a good way to learn a non-Romantic language? Most high schools don't offer any courses, and I can't say for college. As the world progresses, you'll need to know more languages to compete (unless the U.S. succeeds in forcing everyone to speak English). Romantic languages are nice to know, but I'd be very interested in learning the languages spoken in the Middle East and Asia. As far as I know, however, there too many different dialects to point out one general language to learn. Any suggestions?

I speak mandarin fluently but I can't stand cantonese at all. Way to tonal, same goes for vietnamnese. But for some reason I think cantonese sounds amazing when some one is singing in that language. I also dislike the Beijing style mandarin, I think the similiarity between the three is that they are all very rough sounding. Which is why I think cantonese songs are nice, cuz it's being soften up while some one is singing it. IMO opionion, two best sounding language in the world is French and Japanese.
Well that's sort of my problem. It's common to hear of someone "speaking Chinese" or "speaking Arabic", but as far as I know, there are so many different dialects in both of these "languages" that it's hard to pinpoint one as the focus of learning. Perhaps if you could tell me the most commonly-used forms of the language? For instance, I learned proper Spanish in school, but there are so many different variations of Spanish around the world, that it can't be assumed to be understood everywhere. And then you look at something like Mexico, and you assume that they'd speak Spanish, but there are so many people in Mexico that still speak their native Indian languages. And I'm wondering if this might be the case in China and the Middle East. I'm looking for the "proper" forms of these languages, if that's possible.
If you want 'proper' or atleast most widely know Chinese language, learn mandarin. The central gov't is really pushing it in the education system. From what I know, most of the younger generation in Shanghai can't even speak that much Shanghainese because only mandarin is allowed to be spoken in school. One of the sadest thing in Shanghai history.
