Casserly made more then one calculated gamble then Boselli. He messed up on Babin, Buchanon, Hollings, etc... On Boselli, it was already known that Boselli had a slim to none chance of coming back, he was part of a package deal from the Jags...sort of "well if you take this from us you have to take Tony's contract also." If Boselli did come back it would have been seen as an added bonus, otherwise Cass would have been ignorant if he hinged the Texans' future on Boselli's bum shoulder. As good as he was in Washington (I really think Bobby Beatherd should get most of the kudos), he is just as bad here. We really won't know how bad this is until someone else comes in here and reevaluates all the players on this team. This eerily reminds me of Casserly and Norv Turner when they were Washington together. Both blamed each other as the team fell apart on the Heath Shuler deal. And I don't want Mike Martz either.
Babin = 3 draft picks on Day 1 Buchanon = 2 draft picks on Day 1 Hollings = 1st pick of the 2nd round Travis Johnson = First round pick If these trades/picks hadn't been made and we had used them on O-linemen, we would have a much different team. Can you image how different our line would be with SEVEN day 1 draft picks of talent infused into it? Let's put it this way, Seth McKinney and Victor Riley would not even be on the roster.
I say keep Casserly as the GM for negogiating reasonings. But take away his Player Personnel responsibilities...meaning only Charlie does is deal with money and someone else evaluates talent and helps draft talent. It's obvious that Casserly doesn't know how to evaluate talent. He likes to take credit for the Redskins success when he was GM, bit he was an assistant when all the good players were signed and draftet...he really had nothing to do with the Super Bowl win.
I don't see the lineman that we could have gotten that would have improved us that much save that monster kid out in Oakland. But if I remember right, he was already off the board when we took Duante and Duante has been a great pick. Of course, the jury is still out on Babin and Buchanan is looking like a waste at this point. I didn't understand them dumping Aaron Glenn. Everybody knows you gotta have at least 3 starting corners when you are playing in the same division with Indy. But Glenn precipitated that move because he didn't want to come off the bench and I don't blame him. They should have gave Glenn reassurance that he was going to be the starter and Phillip would be the nickel back. However, if you look at every GM in the league, you will see deals that backfired on them, even the best GMs in the business. It's just part of the business. Nobody is 100%. I still think Casserly did the right thing in not drafting that big tackle from Florida that everybody was expecting us to take. If a player has questionable heart, he never does anything in the NFL. I'm glad we didn't waste our pick on him. It would have been nice to see what we could have gotten if we had traded down because at this point Johnson hasn't given us anything this year. You can always find a nose tackle to develop in the 3rd round or later. We needed some impact with that draft pick, whether it was an established player or a picked player. I still think that after this year's draft, we will be greatly improved and set up for a winning season next year. Martz is definitely not the answer. I'd rather see us hire Bart Starr, or John Robinson before they hired Martz.
