I actually tried to tip once when I went to pick up a Domino's pizza and the guy who gave me my pizza actually turned my tip down - told me it was ok not to tip him.

Yeah, I think that's part of the reason why the bartenders prefer you to tip each drink because they realize it's more expensive tip-wise.

i usually tip heavy on the first drink and then either everyother drink after that or just the change after that.

i tip at sonic since they are actually getting out in the heat or cold and bringing my food. i did nothing but say what i wanted. i do not however tip people hickory hollow, christians tailgate or texadelphia where all they did was take my order, swipe my card and call my name/number. i rarely ever do take out so i'm not sure what i would do about tipping the people that bag up my food. i prob wouldn't know. i guess service and tipping to me is if you refill my drinks, get me my silverware, etc.

A lot of the times I order takeout from a restaurant like say, Chilis, simply because I don't want to deal with the hassles of going to a restaurant and having to pay an extra %18-20 on my bill (and that little extra, combined with the drinks you get, adds up).

I think there has been a serious cultural shift in the way people provide service to others. It's like people expect to get tipped for anything and everything they might do for someone else. I don't tip the people who handle my takeout order because they don't provide me any kind of service, aside from getting the takeout order and handling the financial exchange...if I did tip them, then why not the cooks that prepare the food, or why not any other customer service person. The employees at Gamestop I know for a fact get paid like s***t, but do you tip them when they try to find a used game for you, or handle your transaction, or answer questions you may have? No.

And if the few minutes it takes them to deal with me inconveniences them so much, then maybe they should look for a less demanding job.

Quoted for complete and utter truth.

The plight of underpaid waiters doing work that doesn't garner a tip is not my problem.

Let them complain to their managers and demand change, or get a job at a different restaurant that exclusively lets them wait tables, or simply get a job that doesn't rely on the generosity of strangers.

If it's somewhere that I get takeout from a lot, I will tip every once in a while to show my appreciation.

Hold on -- it's not "low wages", it's no wages.

When you wait tables (assuming it's the same as when I did way back in the day), you get paid less than minimum wage on the assumption that tips make up the difference. Your "salary" is like 3 bucks an hour.

It's not the same as comparing it to a bank teller who makes "low wages." Waiters/bartenders are making pretty much nothing except for tips.

When they have to take time to assemble a takeout order, they are literally cutting into their salary because they are working for someone who will tip them 10% (or zero percent judging by this thread) vs. their tables/bar patrons who are tipping them 15%-20%.

EDIT: I admit, however, that I don't always tip people who clearly are just working the cash register or serving as hostess because I assume they are making at least minimum wge. I always tip a waiter/bartender, though. And yes, it is hard to tell sometimes which one is which.

Most waiters have other duties like rolling silverware etc that they don't get tipped for too. Sometimes cooks prepare takeout also. I'm pickup up the damn food. I am doing the work. You are not getting ****. :)

Wait, so do you tip or not? It's still not clear to me. ;)

p.s. You don't roll silverware while you're waiting on other, live tables. That's the difference.

I work at a job that is commission based, but when I have to deal with customer issues, ones that take up time and prevent me from getting sales, I don't get tipped.

EVERY job has tasks that you must attend to that don't directly contribute to your wages/job description.

    Get the **** over it.

I like to leave a buck if the food is good and or the bill is high. I hate those places that have a Tip amount ________ On the receipt when the food is like $7 bucks and it's not worth that much yet your kinda obligated to leave a buck even though you really don't want to because you come off as a cheap b*stard marking a 0 or putting a line where it says tip.

The funny thing is I don't have a problem going to the bar or club and dropping a buck for each drink or several if I'm getting rounds for the friends. Yet I come to this very dilemma about tipping on food.

Well, since I haven't waited tables in almost 15 years, I'm pretty much over it. But thanks.

I think most people in restaurants have to split the tips. The waiters have got to pay the hostess, bus boys, cooks etc. I could be wrong.

But I agree, the new thing for me is to get orders for takeout for the reasons you mentioned.... unless I'm goin out to some fancy dinner and I'm ready to drop a lot and don't care

Do you guys tip for hair cuts? If so, how much? If I pay <$10 I usually leave about 2-3. Last time, she didn't rush it, did a good job, and was easy to talk to, so I left $4.00 beacause the haircut was only $9.00

I leave very small tips if the hooters/wings girls hit on me. I believe they think they can easily manipulate young men.

Not directed at you, man. It was directed at the waitstaff who will scoff or make a person feel uncomfortable if they don't leave a tip on a takeout order.

Didn't address the point I was trying to make. Probably my fault for cramming too many points in my post.

I was just trying to point out at that your comparison of tipping anyone in a "low wage" job is not entirely valid.

Bank tellers or whatever at least make minimum wage. Waiters are not paid minimum wage (or at least they weren't back in the day) because tips make the difference.

If a bank teller was paid $2 per hour based on the fact that a tip jar or something made up the difference, then the comparison is valid.

That's the only point I was trying to make. Debating whether or not people *deserve* the tip based on an over-tipping culture is a different point.
