Man you pick up a pg quick b/c this could be a start of a bad losing streak without a pg. Plus Rockets aren't able to give up to much ground.

According to Van Chancellor the Rockets will make a trade for a point guard before 2 pm tomorrow. I hope he knows what he's talking about.

I also agree with many other that CD should use the first round for Payton...

the Rocs are not rebuilding anymore, they should really use what we have for veteran help... who knows if Sura will come back on time for the playoffs?

I didn't hear Van's comments... I was watching the ESPN broadcast. But I doubt Van spoke from a position of knowledge -- correct me if I'm wrong? I would guess Van was saying, "Oh yeah, they'll make a deal by the deadline tomorrow" (as in : "... because they have to after seeing this performance")

My guess is that is his hunch. I do think the Rockets need to make a move, because Sura's problem is going to plague him all year.

Clutch he said 'he had no doubt about it that the Rockets would make a deal' Then on the post game show he said he thinks a deal will be made in the morning. "the no doubt about it' part is what stood out to me. But thats the way he talks. He sounded absolutely positive though, even saying the Rockets would have 3 off days before their next game to practice with the new player.

Maybe I'm a sucker then. But I sensed he was trying to tell Rocket fans something without actually being able to tell them. Because on the post game show, Bill Worell was nodding his head in agreement the whole time Van was saying the Rockets will make a trade. It seemed like they wanted to tell Rockets fans something without being able to tell them just yet.

Heres a question: The Rockets put Sura on the injured list and did not activate another player to fill that 12th roster spot. Whats up with that? could that mean something as far as a trade being made? or not made?

Answer me this: why would you only go with 11 players when you have two healthy players on the injured list, and more importantly, not activate another guard when we are so banged up at the guard position?

anyway you look at it, to choose to not activate at least Taylor who has said he is ready and healthy, when you have an open spot, just seems odd.

    Signs point to Payton's staying
    By Steve Bulpett/ Celtics Notebook
    Thursday, February 24, 2005

DENVER - While Gary Payton's pronouncements of affection for the Celtics have been met with some skepticism in light of his stated desire to play for the Western contender, the veteran point guard is prepared to put his signature where his mouth is.

According to a league source, Payton's agent, Aaron Goodwin, has spoken to the Celtics about a two-year contract extension.

``We talked about it the last time I was up in town, and if nothing happens by (today's NBA trade deadline) I'm sure we'll talk again,'' Goodwin said yesterday. ``My point was that we should talk about Gary's future - whether it's going to be with the Celtics or whether it's going to be with someone else.''

While Payton has clearly made the best of things since coming over from the Los Angeles Lakers in a move he never wanted, he did say in December that he would most likely be a one-year Celtic at most. Payton can become a free agent at season's end and was hoping to be dealt closer to his family, which still resides in Los Angeles, before then.

Thus, Payton's willingness to consider a longer relationship with the Celtics constitutes a major move on his part.

``But you've got to understand,'' said Goodwin, ``he didn't anticipate, No. 1, liking Boston, which he does. He didn't anticipate being able to adjust to the weather, which he has. And the team is good. It's a good, young team and he likes leading them. So unless it's for a better situation, why would he want to leave? He doesn't want to put himself in a bad situation. He knows he's got a good situation with the Celtics.

``That being said, the Celtics have been real serious about the fact they like that he came in with all the negativity and he's done the things he's done there. My point is, if you want him here then show it. That's all. This is definitely something Gary would consider.

``To me, this is a compliment to the city of Boston and a compliment to the organization. All Danny (Ainge) asked was for an opportunity to win him over, and they won over a guy that really wasn't an East Coast person. Now we'll see what happens. It's truly up to them.''

The Celtics have reportedly had conversations with teams regarding Payton and others as the deadline approaches, but no talks are said to be ongoing.

Also, both sides laughed off the report of a six-player deal between the Celts and Minnesota involving Payton, Mark Blount [news] (difficult to move for now because he is a base-year player) and Jiri Welsch for Sam Cassell, Ervin Johnson, Ndudi Ebi and a first-round draft pick.

Nuggets coach George Karl, a former Payton mentor, told reporters that his club is not trying to acquire Payton.

    Source: Welsch on block

League sources said last night the Celtics are looking to move Jiri Welsch to loosen up their logjam at the wing position. The club is said to be weighing its options, but it appears it will exercise one of them today and Welsch will be moved. . . .

Though the chances of Payton moving appear to be slimming, Paul Pierce [news] put in a late pitch for his teammate.

``Gary's been instrumental to my development since he's been here,'' Pierce said. ``He's definitely left his mark on this team, whether he stays or if he goes. He's been around the block a few times, and whatever's going to make Gary happy is great. But I know that whatever happens I've learned things from him while he's been here. If he continues to be here, I'll continue to learn.''

even though i was for this trade at the beginning, with the update on sura's condition i'm changing my mind. if he misses the minimum 10 days, which i'm gonna hope for cause he's a freaking warrior, then we only have to play 3 more games without him. if he had to go down this was probably the best time, with two three days breaks in the next ten days.
utah, chicago, and washington are all certainly challenges but they are still beatable without sura.

    To clarify the situation:
Jiri Welsch has already been traded -- to Cleveland, for a future first-rounder it appears. While he was a poor fit on the Celtics because of their logjam of guards, he would have been worth pursuing.

The Boston sports press sucks, and has no idea what Ainge is gonna do. I think Payton and possibly Banks (who he already tried to trade) are on the move, esp. after the Webber deal.

Whoops, my bad. The trade isn't official yet, and the main source was Stephen A. Smith and NBA Fast Break. I'm not sure if the Cavs can trade another draft pick, so I may have been totally wrong.
