Where Legends Are Born: Robert Horry

June 20 -- The ability to come through in pressure packed situations is said to be what distinguishes a good player from a great one.

A gamer. A clutch performer. A hero. A legend. Whatever you call them, these players answer the call of duty when everything is on the line. And there is no place where more is on the line than in the NBA Playoffs.

Robert Horry's heroics in Game 5 of the 2005 NBA Finals brought back memories of Big Shot Rob. Do you remember how he got that name?

NBA.com takes a look at the biggest of Big Shot's shots.

    1995: Horry wins Game 3
June 11, 1995 | NBA Finals Game 3 | Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets
With the score tied at 103 and the shot clock winding down, Hakeem Olajuwon kicks out the ball to Robert Horry, who launches a three over Orlando's Horace Grant, propelling the Rockets to a 106-103 victory and a 3-0 series lead on the way to a sweep and back-to-back NBA titles.

    1997: Horry goes 7-7
May 6, 1997 | Western Conference Semifinals Game 2 | Los Angeles Lakers at Utah Jazz
Horry drains all seven of his three-point shots, which is still a playoffs record for most attempts without a miss. Unfortunately, the Lakers lost the game 103-101, and were defeated in the series 4-1.

2001: Horry drops it on the Sixers
June 10, 2001 | NBA Finals Game 3 | Los Angeles Lakers at Philadelphia 76ers
With the series tied at 1-1, the Sixers were within one point with under a minute to play. Brian Shaw found Horry in the corner and he drilled the three with 47.1 seconds left to give the Lakers a four-point lead.

2002: Horry puts the Blazers away
April 28, 2002 | Western Conference First Round Game 3 | Los Angeles Lakers at Portland Trail Blazers
Down by two with 10.2 seconds left, Kobe Bryant drives on Ruben Patterson and kicks the ball to a waiting Horry. Scottie Pippen tries to help out, but Horry's three finishes a first round sweep of the Blazers.

    2002: Horry stuns the Kings
May 26, 2002 | Western Conference Finals Game 4 | Sacramento Kings at Los Angeles Lakers
Up by two points with two seconds remaining, Vlade Divac knocked the ball away as far away from the hoop as he could. Unfortunately for the Kings, Robert Horry was there waiting behind the three-point line. Horry caught and shot in one fluid motion. The three-pointer was pure. Instead of going to Sacramento down 3-1, the Lakers tied the series at 2-2. L.A. would go on to win the series and their third consecutive NBA title.

    2005: Horry silences the Pistons
June 19, 2005 | NBA Finals Game 5 | San Antonio Spurs at Detroit Pistons
Horry capped a unbelievable Finals performance with a three-pointer with 5.9 seconds left in overtime to give the San Antonio Spurs an 96-95 victory and a 3-2 series lead heading into Game 6.

We would have won 3 with Sean Elliot.

Was Rockets beaten by Settle at 4:0 in 1995-96?

Was that the reason Rockets want to Sir Charles?

I think Hakeem lost the motivations after 2 WC. I think that's why Sir Charles and pippen felt sour with Rockets.

    Keep thinking...

    ...here's a thinking aid:

Pippen sucked and was exposed for his extensive hooverness when he didn't produce any measurable difference when in our lineup and kept whining every other game and trying to pass the blame on to everyone else... all the way up to his pathetic dribbling the ball off his knees in crunchtime to send us home in the playoffs against the Lakers.

Chucklehead is 'soured' by the rockets because Les Alexandar stiffed him some money when he promised to pay him extra in the next year after signing for less up front for his bloated non-practicing ass weak performance. (good boarding though; how could you not when you take up half the paint?)

    Come on, ZERO?

Last season we would have taken it with Horry. We were starving for 4th quarter points in game 7, and Horry would have at least made 2 threes. If we beat Goldenstate, we would have ran through the Spurs and the Cavs to win it all.

I believe the Rockets could beat the Spurs in a seven game series ever since 04-05. Now with Robert Horry on our team? Come on.

But still, if we never made that trade, who knows what our team would look like now.

That move for Barkley was D-U-M dumb, S-T-U-P-D stupid.

Yeah so we got swept by Seattle in that series, but that should have hardly been a call for gutting. Cassell and Horry were still raw then, Cassell would go on to become a 20 ppg scorer, and I guarantee you Robert Horry's career would have been much different if he had stayed in Houston and kept on playing the SF role instead of bulking up and moving to the PF spot like he did in LA. There were few 6'10 small forwards when Horry was playing there and Houston always had one of the tallest front lines in the league which was amazing for our defense.

We got killed by Seattle because they had one of their best teams ever with Kemp, Payton, Hawkins, and Schrempf all in their primes. We basically had a Frankenstein CBA frontline of Chucky Brown and Mark Bryant trying to guard one of the best PFs in the league. Signing Kevin Willis should have been enough.

I can't believe we got rid of Smith and Cassell (who were averaging around 23 points and 8 assists together) that season and thought we could cover that lost by signing Brent Price who had one good season where he averaged 10 points.

Still angry about that and all the 7'6 Dream shaking centers in China can't fill that void.

By the way, Horry had some pretty sick dunks. Miss that part off his game the most.

Well, you forget that Charles got us passed Seattle and to the WC.

Also you forget that Kenny didn't last a season after he left the Rockets. He was on his last legs. However he had successful College, then NBA, and now a TV analyst career.

Horry switched over to PF in the 1995 playoffs because we traded away OT. Mario moved in as SF, with Clyde as G. It was the Rockets that started the PF Horry position. He bulked up in LA.

Horry is no different than Phil Jackson. Neither is that good at what they do, but they look like a hero because they put timely cherries and whip cream on to of a quite a few bowls of the best ice cream money can buy.

There could be another question, which could be "Do you think the Rockets would have won ANY NBA titles if they selected Harold Miner instead of Robert Horry in the 1992 NBA Draft?" I would actually like to know how many people on this board were unhappy at that instant the announcement came from Commissioner David Stern that the Rockets selected Robert Horry.

I do think that they manage at least one more NBA Title have they not traded Horry away after being swept by the Sonics in 1996. It is just that they needed to not be having to play the Sonics until the conference finals. You never know, that with some luck, some team in 1997 might have managed to knock off the Sonics prior to the conference finals like what we managed to see happen in 1994 and 1995.

Seeing how Robert contributed in helping the Lakers win their championships from 2000-2002, he still might have been a solid contributer when Hakeem Olajuwon was still around. After the Lakers acquired him from the Suns shortly after his towel throwing incident on Suns Coach Danny Ainge, we would see him make the same contributions in helping the Lakers win their championships much like what he did with the Rockets. But then again, we shouldn't forget about his contributions with the Spurs in 2005 as well.

I think we would have won more titles if Horry and Cassell had never left. We would have just had to figure out a way to get past Seattle.

I always belived that there was one more championship from the '96 roster. They just needed to tweak the personnel to get past the Seattle kryptonite.
