Do you take people less seriously if they don't use basic grammar...?

I think you severely underrate the value of the BBS. I generally don't spend much time on a web site if all it's good for is a "good laugh and a couple of interesting points". The Hangout, for example, is a great board because every now and then, almost on a daily basis, you'll find threads that are educative and help you learn things you might not learn elsewhere. The stock market thread is a great example. I've found gems in threads relating to traffic tickets, property taxes, lawn care and more. If I see a thread about a topic I am interested in, I will proceed to scan it looking for the most valuable material. Proper writing style is, more often than not, a great natural guide to such quality posts.

You don't see value because you don't look for it, or perhaps you can't be bothered to mentally sift the wheat from the chaff.

This, plus this is one BBS where I think the grammar on the whole is one of the best out there.

Most other BBS's I've browsed allow for no grammar harrasing or cursing rules, which leads to posts that are downright childish and stupid.

Agreed. There is only one other message board that I visit that I would rank the posts as having better grammar, post structure, content, and moderation than on ClutchFans. Coincidentally enough, that other message board and ClutchFans are by far the messageboards that I've received a lot of value from.

ur jus jelous that u haf to speil corractly.

    ur, dum.

Unless I am familiar with the poster and know that they actual can produce substance, my opinion of posters who fail to show a knowledge of basic grammar and spelling is very poor.

Now this I agree with. Maybe I don't have a problem with RR's style because I'm used to it, and that took a long time. Doesn't bother me at all... now.

If it's like having to translate hieroglyphics in order to read and understand what they are posting, I skip it. As for spelling, if I can read it, it doesn't bother me if it's misspelled.

I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but I like to come across as a relatively intelligent individual. That means I will use spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation as much as I can. If I want to come across as foolish, I'll post like a fool.

This is how I read other posts. If you post like a jackass, that means you must be a jackass in real life, and I'll regard you as nothing more. Yes, your posts will have a lesser significance to me.

Missed this thread first time around but just wanted to say that I cannot stand to see people misuse the words lose and loose. The opposite of win is lose, not loose.

When I see someone type something like "I sure hope we don't loose this game," how can I take that person seriously?

Just don't ask Rowdy4Life about it.

He tends to be a little sensitive about his handicap.

    (hint: its in my signature)

here is the origin of the quote...

I doubt many people will ever read it because it was in the Buy/Sell forum.

You see, he had a rather clever signature about Shane Battier expressing "Tell me how my ass taste" to Kobe Bryant in more technical terms. I thought it was a funny signature, however he misspelled "buttocks" as "buttox", a common mistake... so I advised him that Shane Battier would never be so foolish as to misspell a simple part of human anatomy.

    After that, hilarity ensued.

i was born to wreck havoc on standard formal english
i dislike periods and capitol letters
i am college educated and have written perfect grammatical papers
the ability to convey ideas intelligently should not rest on the use of standard formal english on an internet sports message board, there are plenty of people who use perfect and basic grammar and who express idiotic ideas
