Consistently bad spelling and grammar makes you look less intelligent. PERIOD (no pun intended).

i hardly capitalize the beginning of my sentences. i'm just too damn lazy to pick up the pinky and place it on the shift button. i do think grammar and punctuation are more important than spelling. unless you constantly use text lingo, now that's freakin' annoying.

*had to edit the above post twice b/c of spelling and grammar errors.

    THIS.

Too many people don't even bother thinking before they type, let alone actually make their posts look presentable. The answer is yes -- if you can't be bothered to try and spell properly, then I can't be bothered to take you seriously. Properly constructed sentences and paragraphs signal to me that you are somewhat intelligent, and you probably exercised a few brain cells in thought before posting. Maybe it's the culture I was brought up in, but that's how it is. It's not even a conscious decision -- my natural tendency is to skim past illiterate-looking posts and pay more attention to properly written ones.

I don't buy the "dude, it's just a message board" excuse either. It really isn't. People do the same thing with emails, Facebook messages, etc. If you dress like a bum, people will probably treat you like one.

so you judge people based more on how well structured their presentation is.. more than the quality of content in their presentation.. and more precisely.. in such qualifying places as.. facebook.. e-mail* .. and message boards..?

you must lead a not so fascinating life.. of limited exposure.. and observation..

I used to think that but as I've gotten older, I have met MANY intelligent people that don't necessarily use perfect English. To me that's just being narrow minded. You could learn something from anybody. Also, what if a person posting on a message board uses English as a second language?

Depends on the thread and subject matter. If it's a serious discussion I think more people will tend to use correct grammar, if it's a thread about a guy with a small penis getting tased then who gives a ****.

My simple answer is "yes", and for all the posters who think that so called "grammar Nazis" are some "better than thou" elitist group...you might want to take a peek at the poll results.

I was on another Basketball forum and a guy made a thread titled, "Three years later, does this count as countinousation?"....

I lost it, laughed for about 5 minutes because of how badly butchered the word was. It didn't make his post unreadable, it was just hilarious.

However, the answer is yes. Only basic grammar/structure is necessary. Not perfect by any means.

    Yes.

So much so that I threw some rep at TJ.

Of course there are intelligent people who don't use proper grammar and spell correctly. Andrew Jackson was a notoriously bad speller and had this to say:

However, Andrew Jackson and people like him don't spend a lot of time posting here.

Also, you can usually tell the difference between someone who is struggling with English as a second language and someone who never cared enough to become minimally proficient in their native tongue.

    Vernacular is okay.

    AOL talk iz teh suk.

Nothing personal, but I gloss over posts like these because reading it feels disjointed and frantic.

This site is a fan forum site so definatatly not. I always find it funny that with culture slang, internet slan and the fact that some of us just have trouble typing sometimes I think its irrelevent if a person is using proper edited typing skills. I find those who critisize people for languge on here to be basically less educated because they focus on the wrong things. Thats the starting level of being closed minded. If you don't conform to my way of doing things I'm not going to listen. Thats why I think its dumb because thats what you say about yourself.

A message board is not a professional setting. If it were, then I would. But since it is not, I don't. Carry on.
