I don't think the first 3 charges are fair. Which players has he alienated? Who has Steve meshed with other than Cat and Cato? Is Yao's lack of development really a coaching problem?
I respect Van Gundy as a defensive coach with attention to detail...I never did hate him as a coach. I do not like him as the de facto GM... His trades for older players are suspect... Signing Charlie Ward to a three year deal is a joke- How can anyone defend that? I do not hate the guy, but I do not like his going to the media on his players.... He should play Andre Barrett more. My issues with him are not large by themselves.... I do not think he is a superior coach to Rudy.... I do not like the guy as de facto GM We are getting older by the minute...... Never did hate him
so our record is not ANY better, Yao does not play better defense, Yao's development is at a stand still, we are winning half the time only because TMAC goes crazy, our team defense is terrible............and yet u still love him? come one man, if you wanna love JVG no matter what, then fine, but if others criticize him dont come up with ridiculous posts bashing them bro........ BTW, I dont hate him, but think he is quite open to criticism.....
I hate him. I think he's horrible for the stars and the franchise. The sooner he implodes the better. That said, I think he could be good somewhere else. Mars, perhaps.
Van Gundy is no offensive coach... We are so static and have no spark on offense.... Do not give him too much credit for NY Knicks... The team was already built by Pat Riley and Dave Checketts and Scott Layden had a blank check for signing talent. Madison Square Garden makes- nets one million dollars every time they open the doors..... Before the Dallas game where McGrady scored 48 points, I really believe that JVG told McGrady to open it up and create. At that point - he gave TMac freedom. JVG gets no credit for this....
Please tell me you wrote this as a joke. Couldn't handle Kobe so he wouldn't be able handle Sura? What do you mean by that, because that makes absolutely zero sense. Anyways, if 9 championships makes you overrated, then let him be overrated. No matter what you say about how he got his championships, he still got them. PJ got the most out of his star players and got his role players to contribute consistently. Jordan, Kobe, and Shaq had their best overall seasons under him, there is no doubt he could do the same for TMac/Yao. Sorry man, but 9 championships speaks for itself.
I've got nothing against him. Never hated him, never disliked him. I'm giving him time just like I gave Rudy, Francis, and Boki time. As far as I'm concerned, he's done nothing to win praise and nothing to be fired yet. He's basically got a completely new team for about half-a-season. The people hating New Yorkers, where the heck do you think Elie and Kenny Smith came from? Those of you just hating him because Rudy's gone - you provide lots of humor.
I appreciate him. He is a good coach and I like his quotes. He is also the only coach that brought us back to playoffs for the last 5 years... He also brought back the kind of basketball I like to watch: where everything is a team effort and superstars spell 'collective'.
for all those that hate JVG. Who are the better coaches them him in the league? I still think he's one of the best in the league and for those that point to him stunting Yao's development. I can't think of any coach that plays more towards a big man's game then JVG. His philosopby still seems to start from the inside out.
Extreme dislike, not hate. I would have prefered someone other then JVG originally for the job. Much like I would have preferred anyone but Jimy Williams as the Astros skipper. One down, one to go.
Rudy T. Phil Jackson Greg Popavich Larry Brown Don Nelson Rick Adelman Just because JVG plays more of an inside game (which I don't fully agree with), that doesn't mean he is developing Yao better. There are a lot of ways to do this, constant negative reinforcement is usually not one of them. BTW, I don't hate JVG, hate is a very strong word. I disliked JVG and felt that he was the wrong coach for Yao/TMac. He has shown me a couple things that I like, but if there was a guy like PJ available, we should jump on that.
Thanks shawn786 for creating this thread (though the header could have been better). PS. Where is Clove these days?
Thats funny. All we heard Rudy's first year as Yao's coach, from every corner of the universe, was that Yao didn't get the ball enough. Now you want him to come back because you think he can develop Yao better than JVG. Right. You don't go fire a coach like JVG after his first year who took the Rockets to the playoffs for the first time in 4 years just because some geezer who now writes bioagraphy books slamming those who made him successful is available. JVG - what you see is what you get with that guy. No fluff. If Yao can't handle the truth then he may need the bull Phil Jackson is capable of giving him. if he is that type of player, a player who doesn't want the truth, and wants meditation timeouts, positive reinforcment meetings with the coach over tea and free stickers that reward him for getting a double-double, then let the two unite somewhere else.
Methinks an approval rating of 55% and up is quite a healthy one. Lets us extend JVG fast for 5 more years
