Almost all the vietnamese people my parents know salt their watermelons, and it really does bring out some sweetness, but people have different tastes. But for me, salt on watermelons is the way to go.
I am generally sometimey about the salt If it is a sweet watermelon . . no salt it is it slightly less than sweet . .. salt brings out the sweetness more My Grandmother user to make Watermelon preserves I never had them .. but my mom, aunts and uncles did Rocket River a walking stereotype
I grew up around salters. I thought it was normal. Actually my mother is from Hope, Arkansas - home of The Hope Watermelon Festival (and Bill Clinton) so she might know what she is doing. I don't care for watermelons though. The Mexicans do crazy stuff like put a chili sauce on strawberries and other fruit. It's darn good though. I could go for some right now.
Absolutely. Can't eat watermelon without it. Although it's such a pain in the butt finding consistently good watermelon anyway so I usually just don't.
If you guys think this is weird, try fried watermelons.. us Asians love that stuff. Then you can dip that fried watermelon in some hawt sauce.
I've never salted watermelon, but I do salt cantaloupe, which I guess is fairly common. I can't imagine salt on watermelon being bad, I've had prosciutto with watermelon and that's pretty good...
look for the ones that have the largest white spot. it means they've been in the ground longer and a lot riper.
I salted watermelons and apples as a kid because my mom fixed it like that for us. Speaking of odd eating habits. My dad use to mix peanut butter and syrup in a bowl and scoop it out with pieces of bread. He called it "goop". The closest thing I've seen on the internet is a peanut butter and syrup sandwich. Top that.

Those mangoes aren't sweet in the first place. In fact, if picked properly, those mangoes should be barely edible before being salted and "chillied". Has anyone ever watched what happens to watermelon if you add honey to it? Try it. It turns rock solid. It's kinda freaky to think you may have had the combination of the two at some point in your life and in the right amounts, could've caused a serious problem for your digestive system.
Alton Brown just did a "Good Eats" on Salt. He mentioned exactly what the OP said. A little salt enhances our ability to taste the flavor of nearly everything. He mentioned Watermelon as an example.
Never tried it, usually just soak em in vodka. Maybe I´ll have to switch to tequila, try the salt & lime, and call it a watermelorita.
I hate watermelon too. It is one of the most disgusting things on earth. Pretty much everyone in my family put salt on their watermelon though.
After seeing some of the reaction to salt here I google salt and watermelon and it seems that all over the world it gets the same reaction. Where do you get chili paste at? I've looked all over my local stores and can't find any. I even asked for them to carry it and they look at me like I'm crazy.
im mexican so i put chile powder or Lucas on most of my fruits, apples, oranges, watermelon, melon, not on peaches, cup cakes and so on. salt itself i havent tried but it should make it tangy. someone said put sugar on something sweet. why would you add sugar to something that already has the perfect amount of natural sugar.
