Any bets whether the artists see any the money the labels make from Pandora et al? Record labels must die. Over the years, I have bought about 200 LPs and about 500 CDs, with the record labels doing everything in their power to screw the artists and me indirectly. Now I only buy after I try. And I try a lot. Usenet and torrents mostly for me. This thread reminds me that I need to try Muse and Vampire Weekend
This. I listen to there music for free but if there good enough I'll buy a T-Shirt or go to a concert to support them.
I almost always use iTunes. I have downloaded a handful of songs that were never released on albums and are not purchasable in any way.
Dispute Heats Up Over Proposed New Fees for Playing Songs on the Radio For more than 70 years, royalty payments for air time have flowed to the songwriters and music publishers but not to the musicians or record companies. Now there is a renewed drive to revisit that arrangement, and in recent weeks the volume of the discussion has increased several decibels. One version of the ad describes a performance fee as a tax that could “bankrupt local radio stations.” And who gets the money? “Giant record companies, most of which are in foreign countries,” the ad says, in reference to the four major labels, three of which have corporate parents outside the United States. Most other countries already require that a royalty be paid to performers for over-the-air play time, but American artists do not see that money because there is no payment for foreign musicians in the United States. full article
artists dont make anything for their music, all their wealth and properties are given to them by their record labels, then once they're washed up, the record labels collects it all back artists make their money from concerts mostly
With all due respect, prove it. Show me the links and show me the figures. You say you support the music produced by the bands and their record labels by going to "events" and purchasing their "merchandise." Meanwhile, illegally downloading their music. Show me how that is not taking money away from the artists who wrote and performed the recorded music. You mention elsewhere in the thread you "have 3 shows to go to next month," and that's how you are "supporting" the groups that produce the music you aren't paying for. Well, I used to go to 3 concerts a week in the late '60's and during the '70's. I also bought several albums a week. Yes, the concerts cost far less to go to and the albums used to cost $3.99 and $4.99, but back then the dollar was worth a hell of a lot more. I just don't buy your argument. You are making excuses for theft, theft from the artists and their producers.
You guys that keep saying artists don't make money from record sales are smoking crack. You tell yourself whatever you need to make yourself feel better about STEALING music. It's irrelevant who is making the money. Lets extend your silly analogy. Gas stations make almost zero profit on gas. Who is clearly profiting is Iran and Chavez plus big oil. Since that's the case, why don't you just steal all your gas? The ONLY reason you steal music is because you CAN. ...then you justify it to yourself afterwards. That's your choice ...but be honest with yourself. It has NOTHING to do your moral position on where the profit it going. It has everything to do with you do it because it's easy.
I, too, would like to know what he is talking about. I break the law if I talk with someone about an Astros' game? Also: "Cameras/Video Equipment: Visitors are welcome to bring video and still cameras into the ballpark; however, tripods and monopods are not allowed in the seating areas. Camera lenses cannot exceed 4.5 inches." http://houston.astros.mlb.com/hou/ballpark/guide.jsp I guess we can bring them in, but not use them.
It's funny that you say this because after downloading certain albums I've thought to myself, "I wish I just had this artist's address and could send them a $5 bill." I occasionally buy certain singles online, but I download most of my music. Frankly, none of the consumer options I have compare to downloading. I can download a full album, listen through it, and cherry-pick the songs I want for my permanent collection at a higher quality and with less waste than other available consumer options. It's simply easier and better than buying online/retail.
I borrow music. I might be wrong, but I feel better about myself by going to a steady stream of live performances.
I download a lot of music for free, but I also buy a good amount of vinyl and CDs. I don't pay to download music, so if I want to own something it'll be on vinyl (or CD if vinyl is unavailable).
Is it stealing to download Rockets games from R2K's video thread? You aren't watching live, DVRing or using NBALP. No one is receiving money for your entertainment.
