I haven't lived in Virginia but I did live in North Carolina and you are very wrong about it being southern. BTW, I loved, loved, loved living there.
I love people who drive trucks and they throw their trash in the back. Then, when they are driving down the freeway, their trash swirls around and flies out of the truck onto cars behind them littering the freeway. I'm not sure what these people are thinking but, when I see it happening, I look at the driver as a major idiot and it doesn't help my impression of pickup truck drivers in general. I also think there are a significant amount of pickup truck owners who think they need a truck to haul stuff but, in actuality, they don't use it for that purpose as much as they think and what they are left with is just a gas guzzler. And, some people just prefer trucks regardless. My own opinion is I would own a truck if I really needed one for hauling stuff...and not just occassionally because then I would think the gas guzzling would outweight the benefits of having the option to haul stuff around. That said...I prefer the smaller trucks versus those bigger ones. I can't stand those huge pickup trucks personally.
well, those residents also soak pork shoulder in vinegar and then cook it on an electric grill, throw some red sloppy slaw on it and call it BBQ. the rest of their opinions are null and void. thats sac relig in the real south. fighting words in texas. plus if it snows more than twice a decade....it aint southern. (NC was nice.....people were very friendly, I'm just not gonna call it the south. )
I just went and looked in the bed of mine, and my fish net and a gaff are still there from this past weekend..........along with a rag to wipe off my hands while fishing. I also saw two empty Federal Black Cloud shotgun shells from last duck season. I hope none of that stuff blows out. I'd miss that net. Got to remember to take it out before the month is up.
I'd like to own a large crew cab pickup 4WD that gets ~20 mpg city. Unfortunately, there aren't any.
Some people get pickups to tow stuff. Others carry a lot of stuff in the bed. Driving through rugged terrain. But why do all the other people get pickup trucks? There are some people who clearly do not need nor use the functionality. Hey, it's your money, more power to you. I'm sure many think my car is boring and pedestrian, but I like it and that's all that counts. I'm just curious. Is it the looks? Am I the only one that doesn't see the aesthetic attraction of pickups? More fun to drive? There is absolutely no appeal for me, unless I had some utilitarian use. I don't think any of them look good. Small or non-existent 2nd row for passengers and you're stuck sitting 3 in the front row. The bed is uncovered so anyone can walk by and take your stuff. And if it rains your stuff gets wet. There are accessories, extended cabs, etc. to compensate. But in general, what's the appeal?
I have an 06 Crew Cab Duramax with about 15,000 miles on it now. It's still getting broken in. I take it to our place in the mtns. every weekend, about 100 up and down miles both ways and then drive it around town during the week. Combination, I'm getting 18.5 to 19 mpg. A couple of months ago, I towed a mini-excavater to the mtns & back and dropped down to 13.5 mpg. Two weeks ago, I towed a 30' camp trailer one way and got 16.5. I don't think I've used a tank just for city driving, but I think it might be 18+. I've heard several instances of dodge diesels getting 19-20 mpg. I had a Ford Excursion diesel that got about 15. Right now, diesel is relatively cheap, compared to gas. Usually it is more expensive, but there are periods it is cheaper.
I have a dodge megacab. I have more back seat space than a mercedes S-class. I have a weatherguard tool box that keeps my tools dry, but I'm thinking about trading that for a tonneau top which will keep everything in the bed dry. I sit up higher than those in cars, and I like that. I get close to 20 mph with my diesel engine......not bad considering the size of this beast and the fact that I have 4 wheel drive. I have much larger brakes than something like a Tahoe or Suburban, and that coupled with the diesel sure makes pulling my boat a joy. And if you've ever hauled a larger trailer, you'll know that by "joy," I mean I sometimes forget it's back there (not literally..........you have to have pulled a big trailer to know what I'm talking about). My wife tried to convince me to get a suburban now that we have a kid because when we go visit her family in Dallas, we simply have too much stuff what with the baby's stuff, our stuff, and the dog in the kennel for her smaller SUV, but with the tonneau, I'll probably have as much room as the suburban with the third row seat removed, I'll have a larger and more comfortable back seat, and I'll still have the towing capability that even a three quarter ton suburban does not have. BUT..........even if I sold my boat, got rid of my tools, and left my family (not gonna happen........I'm just saying....) .......I'd still keep this truck. Or one just like it.
I treat trucks like I treat pools. I don't really want to own one myself, I just want to know someone who does. The only time in my life I have ever actually NEEDED a truck for my own purposes was when I was moving. And that happens so infrequently that it isn't absurd to just rent a U-Haul for a day. I also think it is funny how many people think that they need a truck to be a man, or to be a Texan or even just to be considered a real Southerner. For 99.9% of my lifetime driving vehicles having that extra inside room for groceries, or just having that extra gas mileage, was far more significant a feature to me than being able to toss **** in my truck bed. My wife's friend's daughter was at our house one day (she's like 6 or 7) and she asked me why I drive a car instead of a truck because men drive trucks. Didn't surprise me at all to hear it from her mouth since her dad is kind of an ass and exactly the kind of guy that would look down on another man because he didn't drive a truck. But I think that attitude is pretty wide spread and I loathe it.
Yes. The condescension from truck driving people towards car driving people is thick in this thread. Truck drivers are clearly the assholes.
I drove a '94 Silverado for six years. It made me feel tough and Texan. It was useful when I had to move stuff - there was one too-gradual stuff-moving experience when I was very thankful to have it - but it ate gas like nobody's business. I traded it in for a compact two years ago, right before everyone else finally realized the gas prices were going up and the whole thing was no longer worth it for many of us. Except for the cool image thing, I don't miss it. I have an easier time parking, or going anywhere with more than one passenger. Also, no more people making "friends" with me just because they were about to move and saw a useful truck with a person attached to it.
i own a 2000 toyota tundra. the only thing i really hate about owning a truck is that everyone i know who doesn't own a truck wants to borrow mine to help them move their ****.
It's the curse of owning a truck. I had a Mazda B2200 in high school, Toyota T100 in college, now a Toyota Tacoma PreRunner Crew Cab. I purposely bought the PreRunner with the 5' bed so I have an easy out if someone needs to move. Can't fit a whole lot of crap in a 5' bed.
